Chapter 7
Han So Hee, Min Jae, and Kim Yeon, The three of them trudged through the desolate streets, their footsteps echoing in the silence of the ruined city.
Kim Yeon walked a few paces ahead, keeping his eyes sharp for any sign of danger.
*(so hee chuckling lightly)*
Behind him, Min Jae and Han So Hee exchanged words quietly, a light conversation that grated on Kim Yeon's nerves.
Why does she have to talk so much? Kim Yeon thought bitterly.
He glanced back at the two, seeing Min Jae chuckle this time at something So Hee said.
A wave of irritation swept through him, and he quickened his pace, trying to block them out.
.
.
It had been hours since they left the wall behind. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement, and they needed shelter before nightfall.
After scanning the surroundings, Kim Yeon spotted an old house in the distance—windows boarded up, a sturdy-looking structure.
"There," he said, pointing ahead.
"That should do for the night."
Min Jae nodded, walking beside him.
"Looks safe enough. We can barricade the door if necessary."
Han So Hee followed, her eyes assessing the house.
"We should clear the place first. Make sure there's no one—or nothing—inside."
Kim Yeon didn't bother responding to her.
Obviously, he rolled his eyes.
He pushed ahead, determined to be the first one inside. He wanted to take control of the situation, to show her he didn't need her input.
Together, they cleared the rooms, finding it empty—safe, at least for the night.
.
.
After securing the doors and windows, the three of them gathered in the living room. Kim Yeon sat on one end of the room, pulling a can of food from his backpack and quietly opening it.
As he began eating, he noticed So Hee watching him.
"Are you going to share?" she asked, her tone even, but there was a hint of challenge in her eyes.
Kim Yeon didn't look up.
"I found it. I'm eating it."
Min Jae, sensing the tension, looked between them awkwardly.
"Come on, Yeon. We're all in this together."
Kim Yeon's grip on the can tightened. He looked over at his brother-in-law, his expression softening slightly.
*sigh*
He pulled out another can and tossed it to Min Jae.
"Here. You take this."
So Hee arched an eyebrow, clearly noticing the dynamic.
"And what about me?"
Kim Yeon shrugged, deliberately turning away from her.
"Find your own food."
There was a brief silence, and Kim Yeon could feel the weight of her gaze on him.
To Be Honest ... He didn't care. He wasn't about to share anything with her.
I'm only doing this for Min Jae. She doesn't matter.
Min Jae, uncomfortable with the tension, opened his can and glanced at So Hee gesturing her to share with him.
"We'll find more supplies in the morning. Don't worry, So Hee."
She shot a quick smile at Min Jae, but it didn't reach her eyes.
"Right. I'm not worried."
"... and I'll manage, thanks Min Jae."
Kim Yeon scowled at the way she said it, the confidence in her voice.
Arrogant. Always so sure of herself.
He watched as she moved to a corner, rummaging through her own bag for something to eat.
She barely seemed bothered by his coldness, and that irritated him even more.
As they sat in silence, the quiet hum of the wind outside, Kim Yeon's thoughts drifted back to his sister.
I promised her. I promised I'd keep Min Jae safe.
His eyes flicked to his brother-in-law, watching as Min Jae leaned back against the wall, closing his eyes for a moment of rest and sometimes talking with So Hee.
She's the only family I have left, and now Min Jae is a part of it too.
I won't let him get hurt or stay behind.
... Especially not because of her.
His gaze shifted to So Hee again, the way she seemed so at ease, talking casually with Min Jae as if they were long-lost friends.
It made Kim Yeon's stomach churn.
What does she want with him?
In his mind, it all started to click.
She's trying to get close to him. Maybe she's after something...
... Of course, she's trying to win him over...
Jae is good looking but Yuri — His thoughts were cut off by Min Jae's voice.
"Yeon, you okay?" Min Jae asked, concern lacing his tone.
"You've been quiet."
Kim Yeon blinked, forcing a smile.
"I'm fine. Just thinking."
Min Jae raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced, but let it go.
So Hee glanced at Kim Yeon too, as if she could sense the tension radiating off him.
Kim Yeon stared at So hee for a moment then turned his head away. He couldn't trust her.
She had an agenda, he was sure of it. And whatever it was, he wasn't going to let her succeed.
I have to protect Min Jae
... For Yuri.
His mind was made up—he would keep an eye on her, make sure she didn't get too close to Min Jae.
This is not for me but Yuri...
