Chapter 12

The chaos of the fight surrounded them, and both Kim Yeon and Han So Hee were struggling to keep the zombies at bay

Kim Yeon was busy knocking down zombies when suddenly, out of nowhere, a zombie lunged at Han So Hee from behind

She didn't notice it, her focus on the ones in front of her

"Look out!" Kim Yeon yelled, his heart pounding

Without thinking, he threw himself at the zombie, tackling it to the ground just before it could bite her

They both hit the hard floor, and Kim Yeon winced in pain as something sharp pierced his stomach

He quickly finished off the zombie, but his body stiffened from the wound

Han So Hee turned around, eyes wide

"Are you okay?" she asked, her voice trembling as she saw the blood staining his shirt

"It's nothing. Just a scratch," Kim Yeon said, gritting his teeth against the pain, trying to downplay it. But he couldn't hide the deep gash on his abdomen

Han So Hee didn't have time to argue. More zombies were closing in. She pulled out her gun, her movements swift and precise, and began shooting

Each bullet found its target, and soon, they had cleared a path out of the infested area

Without wasting another second, they escaped to the safety of an abandoned house nearby

As soon as they were inside, Han So Hee rushed to tend to Kim Yeon's wound

She tore open his shirt to reveal the injury

"You said it was just a scratch," she muttered angrily, her hands shaking as she examined the wound

"It's not a bite, So Hee," he said softly, trying to comfort her despite his own pain

"If it were a bite, then yeah, I'd be worried. But it's just a scratch from that thing on the floor"

Tears welled up in her eyes as she cleaned the wound

"But what if... what if it gets infected?" she whispered, her voice breaking

"What if it's more serious than you think?"

Kim Yeon reached out and gently placed his hand on her shoulder.

"Hey, it's going to be okay. I'll be fine," he said, his tone soothing even as the pain flared in his stomach

"It's not a zombie bite. Don't worry"

Over the next week, Han So Hee refused to let him do anything but rest. She diligently treated his wound, making sure it healed properly, and took care of everything else

Kim Yeon watched her, amused by her stubbornness and touched by her concern

She's actually kind of cute when she's bossy, he thought, hiding a small smile

And pretty too...

As the days passed, the tension between them began to ease. They started talking, sharing bits and pieces of their lives before the apocalypse.

One evening, as Kim Yeon was lying down, he broke the silence.

"I was in the Air Force, you know. Took a break a few years ago... And then all this happened"

Han So Hee looked up from where she was preparing a small meal.

"The Air Force? That's impressive," she replied, intrigued.

"You've mentioned your sister and her fiancé before. What happened?"

A shadow crossed Kim Yeon's face.

"Yuri... She's the reason I keep fighting. Her fiancé, Min Jae, is a good guy. I promised her I'd protect him, no matter what."

Han So Hee nodded thoughtfully, then shared her own story.

"I was an ER surgeon," she said, her voice softening with the weight of memories.

"I won a free ticket to travel here, so I came alone. My family... I don't have anyone left. My grandmother raised me, pushed me to become a surgeon, but she passed away three years ago. It's just been me since then."

Kim Yeon felt a pang of sympathy in his chest.

Alone all this time...

"That explains why you know exactly where to aim on a zombie," he joked, trying to lighten the mood.

"I mean, you're a doctor, so you know all the vital spots."

She didn't laugh at first, just raised an eyebrow.

"And how did someone with jokes that bad manage to join the Air Force?" she asked dryly.

Kim Yeon burst out laughing, and after a moment, Han So Hee couldn't help but join in.

The laughter felt strange, almost foreign, in a world so full of danger and death. But for a moment, it allowed them to forget the weight of their situation.

When the laughter died down, Kim Yeon looked at her, his gaze lingering.

"So, no family at all?"

Han So Hee shook her head. "No one."

Without thinking, Kim Yeon whispered, almost to himself,

"I want to take away that loneliness..."

"What?" she asked, not hearing him clearly.

Kim Yeon blinked, startled by his own words.

"N-Nothing," he stammered, quickly turning his attention back to his wound, his face burning with embarrassment.

What the hell am I saying?

Han So Hee shrugged, not pressing the matter, but she couldn't shake the feeling that Kim Yeon was hiding something deeper behind his usual jokes and flippant remarks.
