Chapter 8
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow through the dusty windows, Han So Hee settled into a corner of the living room.
She watched Kim Yeon, her eyes trailing Kim Yeon as he fiddled with a device she couldn't recognize.
Annoyingly, selfish, and rude, she thought, shaking her head slightly.
Yet, despite her frustration, she couldn't shake the feeling of Kindness for Min Jae, who had risked his life to find his brother-in-law.
.
.
Across the room, Kim Yeon was tinkering with a hand crank generator and an old military radio.
So Hee glanced at the strange equipment, not knowing what to make of it.
What's he up to now? she mused.
He had been going in and out of the house all evening, clutching those devices like they were the key to their survival.
After another trip outside, Kim Yeon returned, his face serious but slightly triumphant.
He walked over to Min Jae, who was seated by the window, and handed him a piece of paper.
"I got in touch with them...,"
Kim Yeon said, his voice low but tense with excitement.
"...Tomorrow, we leave. We'll head toward the extraction point. There's a helicopter coming in."
Min Jae's face lit up.
"Really? We're getting out of here?"
Kim Yeon nodded, and for the first time since So Hee had met him, there was a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
"Yeah. We just have to move early, before the zombies swarm the area."
The news lifted the mood in the room.
After searching the kitchen Min Jae had found a bottle of wine in the kitchen, and soon he and Kim Yeon were sharing drinks, laughing about old memories, while So Hee watched from a distance.
She had declined the offer to drink but join them with some juice and bread, her mind too focused on the task of survival.
I don't need to drink. I need to think.
They shared a laugh, and for a moment, the tension in the air dissipated.
.
.
But as the alcohol took effect, Min Jae grew increasingly jovial, while Kim Yeon became more irritable.
