"I don't know, Jeongin. It's just—I just—" she takes a pause, "I knew I'd get hate, who doesn't? But so soon? I didn't expect that."
Jeongin lies down on Sunhee's bed as she sits next to him cross-legged. "People are horrible, Sunhee, and I'm so, so sorry you had to go through this so soon." He takes her hand and leans his head back against her headboard.
Holding his hand in both of hers, Sunhee fights back her tears again. "It's not just that."
Jeongin sits up urgently, still holding her hand. "Han? It's Han, isn't it?" She opens her mouth to respond, but Jeongin is quick to speak again. "I swear I won't ever let him hurt you like that again, Sunhee." He runs a cold finger over her sore wrist, wishing there was something he could do to take the pain away.
"It's not even that." She sighs.
Of all the people she's met in her life, she's never liked someone quite as much as she likes Jeongin.
Letting go of his comforting hand, she allows her chest to rise and fall.
"I was meant to be in Itzy. I was born to be in—I should've been in Itzy. But then it all went to shit. You see, erm, well." Her thumbs make circular movements around each other until Jeongin sits up and holds her hand again.
He can do nothing but hold in his shock to feel sympathy. "I really liked Yeji." The never-ending tears glisten in her eyes again. "I really, really fucking liked her. I thought she was the one. I couldn't see a future with anyone else. And eventually, I came out to the whole group, and they all took it well. Especially Lia." She pauses and adjusts herself to look at him. "Promise you won't tell anyone about this."
Jeongin's face folds into confusion. "I'd never do that to you, Sunhee."
"Pinky promise?" She holds her pinky up for him, and he interlocks his. "Now we touch thumbs!" She smiles through dripping tears and raises her thumb, but his face only grows more confused.
"What?" He chuckles, his lips forming a confused line.
"We touch thumbs, to lock it in." She carefully raises his thumb for him, allowing their thumb pads to touch.
"Oh yeah, 'cause that's so obvious." He rolls his eyes before releasing his hand from hers. "Now, continue."
"Oh yeah, sorry." Her thumbs twiddle together again.
Jeongin shakes his head. "Don't be sorry."
"Okay, anyway. So, I came out, and it went really well, and then I told her I liked her, and we started dating—oh, after she said she liked me back. It was good. She loved me. She showed it every day with flowers, kisses, helping me learn the dances. And then, a year before we were set to debut, she just suddenly stopped talking to me. She blocked me on everything."
"What? She seemed nice at the party."
"I know, it's so out of character. So I got scared she didn't like me anymore, and it turns out she actually hated me. She said that we are 'too different' and that she loved herself and hated me. I still don't know what I did wrong, and it plagues me."
"What a bitch!" Jeongin laughs, and Sunhee slaps his shoulder. "Hey! She was nice at one point!"
"Yeah, at one point." Sunhee frowns at his comment. "Jeongin, you didn't deserve that at all."
"I don't know what I deserve."
"Sunhee," he turns to face her fully, legs crossed, "you deserve someone who'll treat you how you deserve to be treated. You deserve someone who'll love you, nurture you, be patient with you."
"Someone like you?"
The closeness of both their bodies and faces shocks Sunhee. His gorgeous eyes land on her lip, quickly flickering up to her eyes.
I don't deserve someone like you, Sunhee. He sits back up.
"Someone like me or someone like Jooyeon?"
"Oh shit. You mean yesterday?" Shit. The consequences of her actions. "I was just super drunk and emotional. I'm sorry, Jeongin."
"Don't be sorry. Never be sorry. I was just confused."
"Confused?"
"Yeah. I thought we ha—no! I was just shocked." He smiles a little, looking down.
"Well, I heard you talking about your ex yesterday. Tell me more." She nudges his arm. Jeongin looks shocked; he thought no one had heard that.
"I didn't think you heard that." His knees raise up so he can rest his chin on them, a guilty expression on his face.
"I didn't think you saw the kiss."
Jeongin rolls his eyes dramatically. "She wasn't actually that big of a deal. Just a little summer fling."
Never in her life did she think she'd hear Yang Jeongin say the words "summer fling."
"Summer fling? Gosh, how old are you?" She pokes his shoulder as he giggles.
"Older than you." He pokes her cheek. "But Yuseok was just someone I dated for the summer."
"How did you meet her?" She pokes his muscle this time and tries not to react at the firmness of it.
"She was my makeup artist." He sighs, covering his face as Sunhee shoves his shoulder, making him fall back onto the bed.
"Jeongin, you little scandal! How did you get away with it?" She asks, shocked JYP's management didn't snitch on him.
"Very carefully. Don't tell Chan though." He presses a finger to his lips, sitting up.
"Pinky promise." She taps her finger before repeating the process with him all over again.
"So, Sunhee, are you a lesbian?" At his question, Sunhee can't help but burst out laughing, clutching her stomach in a futile attempt to control her laughter.
"No! I support you! Lesbian, right, Sunhee? I'm not judging." He holds up a fist.
"I know you do!" She wheezes, folding over to press her forehead against her folded legs. "It's just funny 'cos I'm bi, not a lesbian! You saw the kiss, didn't you?"
Jeongin breathes a sigh of relief before realizing how embarrassing that just was. Of course she's not a lesbian.
He shoves a pillow over his face, embarrassed, and screams into it.
"I'm dumb. Sorry." he grumbles.
