Louis does not look impressed when they finally show up at the new ranch house, but Austin shrugs at him and grins as he hands Dillon her gloves. "Don't get into any trouble, girl," he hums then leans on the hood of his truck while he lights a cigarette. "She is trouble," Louis grumbles taking a cigarette from Austin and leaning on the hood next to him. "I know, Lou," Austin says smirking at Dillon while she rolls her eyes at both of them. "If we are keeping score around who is trouble, I would like to point out I fully intended on arriving here on time. Austin was driving, and he deviated," she says, trying to defend her innocent self, but the look on both men's faces tells her that Louis blames her and Austin is taking no responsibility.
"Whatever," she says giving up and turning to walk towards the house, ignoring Austin's chuckle as he walks off in the opposite direction. "Hold on there for a second, please, Dillon," Louis says suddenly; he sounds a little nervous, and when Dillon turns around to face him, he looks downright guilty. "Everything alright Lou?" she asks. "Well...now that we have a moment to ourselves..." he whispers looking around with nervous eyes. He makes Dillon nervous so she looks around too. "I would just like to say, and please don't overthink my words, I love my Becky very much...but, well I am a fair man and so I will give credit where credit is due..." he says, it looks like he is about to commit a crime and Dillon swears there is a thin line of sweat forming on his brow.
"Uh...are you OK, Lou?"
"I am fine. I enjoyed your cookin'. Thank you. Please keep this between us," he says as he looks around again with a very guilty face. "Um...I have never received such a fearful compliment. But, thank you. I guess? Why are you complimenting my cooking in private?" Dillon asks. "Because he is a low-down dirty cheat, that's why Miss Dillon," Becky says, stepping out from behind Austin's truck. Louis' eyes go wide, and his face goes white. "I spend hours every day making sure you get a good meal. Blisters from hot ovens. Look at this," she says, holding up her arm and pointing at an old-looking scar, "I am scared for life. All this back-breaking effort, and here I find you complimenting another woman's cooking. Do I mean nothing to you?"
"Darlin'..."
"No. I am terribly hurt. I need some time to come to terms with this betrayal," Becky says, holding up her hand while Louis hangs his head in shame, and Dillon has to cover her mouth to stop her laugh from tumbling out. This whole exchange is ridiculous. Louis sighs heavily, then turns and walks off while Dillon watches him go, then turns to look at Becky. "Are you really mad?" she asks. Becky lets out a giggle and shakes her head. "No. Not at all. But, Lou feels like he is cheating when he compliments another woman's food. He feels like he is betraying me," Backy says laughing again. "You don't help ease his mind," Dillon says, laughing too, then stops abruptly when she sees a dust cloud rising from the ranch road, and suddenly, four large sheriff trucks appear. Austin and Louis appear with serious faces, reaching into their trucks and pulling out their shotguns while Austin's men down their tools and find their rifles quickly. "Stay behind me, darlin'," Austin says cocking his shotgun and then planting himself firmly on the ground facing the oncoming Sherif trucks. With her heart hammering so hard against her chest it's painful, Dillon slips in behind Austin, as Becky does with Louis, and peeps around his arm.
She watches as the four trucks park and then men, who have clearly seen better days, climb out. Then, finally, Luke emerges with a nasty-looking smirk on his face and walks up to Austin. The two men stare at each other and Dillon's blood runs cold at how much hatred seems to pass between them. There is clearly no love lost between them. But, the longer Dillon stares around Austin at Luke the more she realizes Luke looks very much like Austin. "I ain't here for you. I am here for the girl," Luke says eventually. Dillon reaches out and grabs the back of Austin's shirt in her shock, nausea rising in her chest. He is here for her? Why?
