"I had not thought about how I am going to make dinner. We have no appliances," she sighs looking around the kitchen. It has been crafted beautifully with white cabinets and polished hardwood counters that still have the raw edge to them. It's a massive kitchen and more beautiful than she ever imagined. "I got that sorted!" Austin calls from the living room, where they had set up the mattress for the night in front of the huge fireplace. Dillon pops her head into the living room and smiles as she watches Austin throw another log onto the fire he had made. "You made dinner?" she asks, surprised. She thought Austin did not know how to cook. "I made dessert too," he mumbles over his shoulder, then stands and walks toward her.
"Get comfortable and I will bring it out."
"Why?"
"Dinner is an important meal."
"No. I mean why did you make dinner?"
"This is a special occasion is it not? First night at home."
Dillon melts and nods then climbs onto the mattress and fluffs out the bedding and pillows after kissing his cheeks. She fucking loves that man. She can hear him moving around in the kitchen, not sure what he is doing with no appliances, but he has always come out on top, and she trusts him, so she doesn't worry too much as she settles into the comfortable make-shift bed.
Ten minutes later he appears with a plate in each hand, two beers tucked under his left arm and a bag tucked under his right arm. "For my baby," he says handing her a plate. She reaches up and takes it then takes the beer he hands her and grins. "Peanut butter sandwiches..." she says with a soft laugh. "And dessert," he says holding up the bag from under his arm. "Marshmallows! I haven't had marshmallows in ages," she says as he settles down next to her. "They are best roasted. Sticky and sweet," he says. "I will tell you what's the best. This peanut butter sandwich...best I have ever had," she says trying to talk around the bread and peanut butter stuck to her teeth.
"Before Becky, Louis and I had peanut butter sandwiches almost every night."
"I feel bad. Here we are in this massive beautiful house while they are still in a trailer. I know all Louis wants is to give Becky a home."
Austin takes a bite of his sandwich and then watches her with a soft smile as he chews. He has that playful glint in his eye again and it gives her butterflies. "Can you keep a secret, Miss Dillon?" he asks when he swallows the food in his mouth.
"I won't keep a secret from you. But, I can keep a secret."
"Correct answer. Extra marshmallows for you, ma'am," he says, chuckling as he stands up and walks over to a box he had brought with him that is filled with messy paper. He pulls two rolled-up papers out, one large, one a little smaller, then comes back to the mattress and opens the large roll, spreading it out on the floor next to the mattress. "This is a map of the ranch," he says. Dillon looks over it, still shocked at the size of it. His ranch is massive. "There's the river that runs through the ranch," he says sliding his finger along a thick blue line. "there's where the trailers are, the waterfall, the old ranch house, the heifers, and then right here is where we are now," he says pointing to an x drawn in pencil right in the very centre of the ranch.
"Our home."
"Yes. Our home. Now, this secret is between you and me for now..." he says, then runs his finger down the centre of the ranch. "This will be our ranch," he says tapping the side their house is built on. "And this side..." he says, moving his finger to the other side, "belongs to Lou," he says, tapping the map. Dillon's mouth drops open, and her eyes widen slightly. He is giving Louis half his ranch? That's insane.
"What...what does Lou say about this?"
"He does not know. I offered him land, and he assumed it was a small piece in the corner. Even that was an uphill battle to get him to accept. He will be too humble to accept this. I have seen a lawyer and had him divide the ranch and draw up a new dead...but, I won't hand it to him without your approval."
