"Why did you hum like that?" she asks when he parks the truck in front of their home. She can't hold back anymore and she can feel her anger boiling like a pressure cooker under her skin. "I ain't doin' this with ya. It's not the time," Austin hums softly. "Why did you hum like that?" she repeats, her anger growing.
"Darlin', you are scared and lashin' out. I am bein' as understandin' as I can, but I ain't your punchin' bag."
"I am not scared! I am angry! I want you to explain why you hummed like that! Just because you know you were wrong and out of line and I am calling you out on it does not mean I am lashing out!"
"Darlin'. I ain't the enemy here."
"How dare you hum like that! You implied that Isla was not there against her own free will. You think she chose to leave! Just admit it!"
Austin sucks his lips in and remains quiet. "Don't you dare go silent on me!" she shouts, her anger making her eyes fill with tears. Nothing. He says nothing. "She would not do that, Austin!" she shouts. Austin's jaw clenches, and he runs his hand over his face; he looks like he is forcing himself to remain quiet. Why? He is always so straightforward; the man has no filter. But, he chooses to remain quiet on this. Why? "Fine!" she shouts pushing open her door and hoping out. She storms around the truck and makes for Becky and Louis' trailer but Austin grabs her arm firmly. "Let go of me!" she shouts, trying to get out of his grasp, she is weak against him, but she carries on. When she refuses to calm he picks her up, mid-tantrum, and heads for the house. "Put me down! Fuck off, Austin! Let me go!" she screams as she kicks her legs and tries to push herself off him; it only serves to make him tighten his grip on her. Austin's strength scares her a little, his arms are like steel bars. He is gentle with her, but she is no match against him. He opens the front door and then slams it behind them with his foot, planting himself in front of it before he places her down.
"What the fuck is wrong with you!?" she screams, her throat feeling raw from all her screaming. "Enough, baby," he says softly moving her hands from his body as she tries to push him away from the front door. "No! Let me out!" she screams trying to get the door open and push him aside at the same time. She feels like she is becoming unhinged.
"Enough!" his voice booms, echoing around the house like rolling thunder and making Dillon's bones vibrate. The sound causes her body to jolt and freeze then with shaking hands she takes a step back and stares wide-eyed at him. He has never raised his voice or turned his anger on her before. She doesn't like the feeling and it causes a painful lump in her throat that she can't swallow. "I apologise for shoutin' at you, baby," he says, his voice once again calm and slow; it soothes her somewhat. But, she is still biting back her cry. "We do not part. I will give you the space you need right now. But, you will sleep in our bed, you will sleep beside me till your anger calms," he says softly but sternly.
"I will not negotiate on that. Do you understand me, Dillon?"
"Yes," she croaks, wiping the tears that have spilled over onto her cheeks. "Off with ya then," he says softly. She turns and trudges up to their room. Sad, in shock and still angry, her movements are zombi-like. She peels her clothing off and showers, taking a moment to cry under the beating water before she pulls on her pyjamas and slips into bed. She is not hungry and normally would be fretting about feeding Austin but she just doesn't have the desire. She doesn't have the will to do anything, and sleep stays away as she stares wide-eyed at the blank wall. Numb, that's all she feels right now.
She hears Austin come into the room about an hour later, shower and then slip into bed next to her. He doesn't pull her closer and tuck her into his side like he normally does, and that hurts her heart, but he is giving her the space she had demanded. It feels like there is an entire gorge between them and she does not like the feeling.
