"OK, Dillon, you can do this. Just go out there and tell him you need to talk. Insist if you need to and under no circumstances accept a no. Oh, and keep your cool," Dillon says to herself, picking up the dinner plates and then putting them back down when a wave of doubt washes over her. "Who am I kidding? The man is like a brick wall and impossible," she groans. The stone in her bracelet flashes suddenly when it reflects the bright kitchen light above and it catches her eye. "You are right, Violet," she says, picking up the dinner plates again with newfound confidence. "I will put him in his place. I am going to the city and he will just have to deal with it," she snips as she walks through the lounge with their dinner. "Austin. We need to talk," she says walking onto the patio that leads off the lounge and looks over the gorge. "No," he says taking his dinner from her. "Thank you, this looks good," he adds and smiles at her.
"No?"
"Yes. No," he says, grinning as he puts a fork full of food into his mouth.
"You don't even know what I want to talk about."
"I do and the answer is no. You will not be going to the city."
"But, the house is empty. We need furniture."
"Make a list; I will send my men into the city and get whatever your little heart desires."
"My little heart desires a trip to the city."
"No," Austin hums sucking on a bone. Dillon glares at him and chews her peas angrily. "You will break your teeth, darlin'," he says. "I will break you," she mumbles under her breath.
"What did you say? I did not hear you."
"Why can't I go into the city?" she asks swallowing her food. "You know why," Austin says with a heavy sigh. They have been having this conversation for three days now. Austin is tired, she is tired. But, she will admit she is as stubborn as he is, so she won't back down no matter how many heavy sighs he makes or how many pointed faces he gives her.
"But, you said yourself that Luke doesn't do cities. I will be safe."
"You are safe at my side."
"Austin-"
"Let a man eat his dinner in peace, baby," he says cutting her off. It's been a week since they moved in and the house is still empty. Their clothing is in the cupboards, they sleep on the mattress they have now moved to the main bedroom, and there are a few boxes from the trailer piled in the lounge. There are a few food items in the kitchen cabinets, and she cooks in Becky's trailer. But, that's it.
Austin has also been worse than he has ever been when it comes to his overprotectiveness of her. She understands he is just trying to ensure her safety but his fear is blinding him. He is suffocating her. She feels like a prisoner and can't even be alone in her head because he always seems to know exactly what she is thinking. She is on the brink of losing her mind, and on top of it all - there is no reasoning with this dam man. Anger at him refusing to even have a reasonable conversation with her shoots through her body, and she throws her plate on the floor, breaking it in half, then stands and stamps into the house.
It was childish of her, but she is so angry she couldn't help it. She paces the kitchen in her anger and tries to calm herself, but it's no use, her anger continues to climb the more she thinks about how stubborn and unrealistic Austin is being. She stops and stares at Austin when he walks into the kitchen quietly a few minutes later, shooting her a disappointed face as he places his dish in the sink and her broken dish in the trash bag near the back door.
"Austin-"
"The answer is still no, darlin'," he hums quietly.
She glares at him and folds her arms across her chest in annoyance. She can't believe he is being this stubborn. She won't take no for an answer, besides, she doesn't need an answer from him because she is not asking his permission anymore. She is no longer asking him. She is telling him. She is going.
