Dillon wakes to the sound of men's voices and the rumble of engines. She sits up in bed and then jumps when she hears a loud thud coming from downstairs. Concerned that she woke up alone, she never thought Austin would ever leave her alone again, but curious as to what's going on, she slips out of bed. She opens the bedroom door and peeps her head out. "You damage any of that furniture and you will have to deal with my wife on your own. I ain't coppin' shit for ya," she hears Austin growl. The furniture has arrived and excitement shoots down her spine. It's way earlier than she expected. So, with her head in the clouds, she shoots out of the bedroom and starts rushing down the stairs. Austin is in the middle of the lounge with Harriet; they will speak about boundaries later. He looks up when he hears her coming, his eyes widening and then a deep frown sets in on his face. He moves toward her quickly while he rips his shirt off and then wraps her in it as soon as he gets to her.
"When I die of heart failure, you will be the cause," he snips. It had been so hot last night and it had not helped that Austin had added to the heat by settling between her thighs for most of the night. So she had slept in her underwear. She had forgotten what she was wearing. "Oops," she says trying to stop her giggle. "Oops, my ass, girl," he growls, moving her straight up the stairs and back to their bedroom before any of the men see. As soon as they are safely inside the bedroom, he lets her go, and she dashes into their closet to get dressed. "We need to talk about your lack of clothing," he grumbles. "Yes, we should. You are the reason. You could always just keep your hands off me, and then I will remain fully clothed at all times," she says from inside the closet, smiling when she hears him grunt.
"That's a dumb idea."
"It's a good idea. If you want to talk about dumb ideas let's talk about that horse inside my house. She is not a puppy, rancher. She stays outside," she says walking out of the closet fully clothed.
"She gets lonely."
"Outside, Austin, I mean it," Dillon warns pulling open the bedroom door and stepping out. She gives Austin a warning look as they walk down the stairs together. Harriet is standing right in the middle of the dam lounge. It's ridiculous. "Come on, Harriet, some people are not very nice," he mumbles, throwing Dillon a dirty look as he walks out the lounge doors with Harriet following him. "Where do you want this, Miss Dillon?" Mitch asks carrying in a side table. "In here, please, Mitch," she says, pointing to the lounge.
They spend the rest of the day carting in furniture while Becky helps her hang curtains and then make lunch for everyone. Louis and Austin almost murder each other while they attempt to build a few of the flat-pack pieces of furniture Dillon had bought. "If that ain't a test to their friendship, nothing is," Becky says laughing at them while Dillon nods.
By late afternoon, the house is full, and everything is set up. Dillon is in love with her home and can't stop smiling while she pulls Austin from room to room explaining where she bought each piece and why it works so well with the vision she had for each room. Bless him; he humours her with soft hums and the occasional nod of his head. But she sees the way his face lights up when she eventually shows him the chair he had asked for that she placed on the back porch. She thinks he will spend most of his time on that chair. She leaves him in it to sip on a cold beer while he chats to Harriet and looks out over his gorge.
She is so happy and content that she finds herself humming while she makes their dinner. She never dreamed of this life simply because she had not known it existed. She always thought she would get a little apartment in the heart of Boston, close to Isla. She would have married her ex, and they both would have focused on building their careers separately while they attended events together with their superficial friends and chatted about their accomplishments. She had wanted children, but he had not, so she had been trying to make peace with that at the time Isla had vanished. After Isla had vanished, she had decided she didn't want children if Isla was not around to be a part of their lives, so she had figured she would remain child-free. It was a pretty lonely life, especially without her parents. She knows Austin will want children. What will that even look like?
