By the time she hears Austin's truck pull up outside, she has showered, washed her hair, dried and styled it in thick waves, done her makeup and dressed in a pretty light blue satin slip dress. She may over gone a little over the top for a simple country fair, but there is always something special about a first date and the thought of going on a first date with Austin has her insides flip-flopping all over the place. She sprays a little perfume, then shoots up when she hears the front door open, checking her appearance in the mirror one more time quickly before she heads to the kitchen. She stops in her tracks when she sees Austin standing at the front door. She melts a little and her knees turn to jelly when she sees he is holding a bunch of freshly picked flowers.
"Hi," she squeaks and catches her bottom lip in her teeth; her smile is ridiculously big. His eyebrows shoot up as he scans his eyes over her, then whips his Stetson off quickly; he looks a little caught off guard. "You...uh...wow...you look beautiful, Miss Dillon," he says, then whistles softly through his teeth. "Thank you," she says, touching her hair and smoothing down her dress; she feels a little shy all of a sudden. "Not too much?" she asks. "No...wow..." he hums, his eyes still locked onto her. "Are those for me?" she asks. "What? Oh, yes. Yes, these are for you," he says quickly, stepping closer to her and holding the flowers out to her, he looks a little flustered. "Are you OK?" she asks taking the flowers.
"No, ma'am. You got me fucked up."
"You are sweating."
"That's the least of my problems. I may need a doctor; my heart ain't workin' right," he says, sweeping his eyes over her again. "Oh, stop," she whispers getting those butterflies in her stomach again and laughing softly. "You want your hello kiss?" she asks. "Yes," he says, stepping closer, then steps back quickly. "No. I don't want to dirty your pretty dress. Wait here while I shower," he says, disappearing into the bedroom, then popping his head back out. "Don't disappear on me. I will be quick...wow..." he says, taking a moment to rake his eyes over her once again before he finally disappears.
Dillon laughs into her flowers, that giddy feeling has her her whole body shaking. He makes her feel beautiful. Being in love with someone has many turns and twists, but giddy moments like this are the best feeling. She hopes he still makes her feel like this when they are old and grey, she thinks he will. She finds an old jar and washes it out, then uses it as a vase to display her flowers, placing them in the middle of the table. True to his word, Austin rushes his shower and then comes out of the bedroom, still damp and warm. He doesn't stop or say a word as he stalks up to her and pulls her into his arms. His lips find hers and he kisses her till her lungs almost burst.
"Ready?" he whispers when he finally lets her go, running his hand over her silk dress. Still recovering from the kiss, she nods and lets him take her hand, leading her out to the truck. He opens the passenger door but stops her from getting in. "Wait," he says heading back into the trailer and then coming out with one of his jackets. "These workin' trucks get dirty. We wouldn't want to ruin that pretty dress of yours," he says, placing the jacket down on the passenger seat and then helping her inside. "Thank you," she whispers, she has an entire field of butterflies in her stomach now. "Mmm, you smell nice," he says leaning into the truck and pushing his face into her neck. She giggles and lets him sniff around for a bit, but when he lets go of the door and wraps his arms around her, she has to push him off. "We will never leave if you carry on like this and I am horrified you would be so forward on our first date. I am a lady..."
"Mhmmm, you won't be much of a lady on our way back from the fair, darlin'," he says with a chuckle and a wink, then closes the door as Dillon's mouth drops open. He is too brazen for his own good. She would never! That's a lie, she absolutely would.
She notices a few trucks as they head out to the main road, so she looks over at Austin, who shrugs and rolls his eyes. "Lou is taking Becky to the fair, and some of the men have women in town they are trying to impress too," he says.
