Olivia quickly walks out the back door, where another girl is also staring. Olivia looks away quickly to avoid her judging eyes.

The girl was giving her a weird look, which made Olivia feel uncomfortable. Luckily, she went into the lunchroom, carrying an empty tray.

She sat down in the grass by a single flower. It looked to be the only one who had survived the weed apocalypse that was happening in this place.

At least I don't have to stay here for long, she thought, my parents will realize their mistake and come back for me.

Olivia sighed, and, feeling lonely, she decided to turn to the plant. She glanced around warily, making sure nobody was around to hear her.

"Hi! My name is Olivia! What's yours?" She asked the flower, after deducting that there was nobody else but here there.

The flower stopped drooping to stand up straight and look at her. It picked up a wilted leaf to wave at Olivia. Leslie, it replied.

"Leslie... That's a pretty name!" Olivia replied happily, because Leslie had responded. Sometimes the plants don't respond to her if they are weak like Leslie was.

Leslie looked like she was going to say more, but a bell rang signaling bed time, so Olivia got up and ran to the dormitories, waving to Leslie goodbye.

_______

"Come on Emmet, we're gonna be late!" Olivia yelled over her shoulder to Emmet, her twin brother. They were heading to a dinner party at their neighbors house, which wasn't all that close in the area that they lived.

They grew up on a small farm, very far from all of their neighbors. Their parents let them walk there after they were ready, but Olivia had forgotten to watch the time, and they were going to be late.

"I'm coming, I'm coming," Emmet calls back to me.

Olivia opened her mouth to reply, but she tripped and fell forward. She looked back at what tripped her, but all she saw were the leaves from a willow tree.

Then, right before she turned away, she saw something that made her heart nearly stop beating. The tree raised a branch to wave at her.

"Why are you just sitting there? Come on Liv, mom and dad are gonna be mad at us!" Emmet said, surprised that I wasn't way ahead of him.

"Sorry," Olivia replied.

They made it to the party only a couple minutes late, but she never forgot about the tree, who she later named Gwen, and went to talk to often.

________

Olivia held her pet bunny in her hand as she went to feed the snakes. Don't forget to feed the fish, she reminded herself.

This was always the craziest time of the day. Feeding time. She had two dogs, one cat, five fish, one bunny, and three snakes. Her family never understood why she was so obsessed with animals, but they didn't complain and let her have them, as long as she took care of them herself.

Olivia brought the dogs outside, and making sure nobody was around, she told them, "I'm going to see Gwen, so be good and don't give Emmet such a hard time."

They both nodded their heads and wagged their tails to wave goodbye.

Olivia ran off, and failed to notice Emmet standing behind the door, he had seen the whole thing.

Emmet followed Olivia out to 'Gwen,' whoever that was. He made sure that she didn't see him.

"Hi Gwen," Olivia greeted, "How are you today?" To Emmet's surprise, the tree waved and held up what looks like a thumbs up with its leaves. He gasped, and Olivia turned around.

"Who's there?" She demanded.

"What was that Liv?" Emmet replied shakily.

"I can explain, Emmet, I can talk to plants and animals!" She says hurriedly, worried about what Emmet would say.

Emmet didn't say anything, instead, he started running towards home.

Olivia immediately ran after him. She was slightly faster than him and caught up easily.

"Emmet please! Don't tell anyone!" Olivia calls, breathless.

"You're crazy!" Emmet yells fearfully, like she was going to hurt him.

"Emmet you're my twin brother, I would never lie to you! Please just let me explain!" Olivia replies desperately, they were very close to the house now.

"I'm sorry Liv," he says at the front door and runs in before her.

_____

It had been three years since she had seen her brother. She had been sent to her grandparents house, they sent her to a boarding school, then she was sent to a mental institution.

She's fifteen now, and still tries to be an optimist. She doesn't even care where she is sent anymore, but tries to make the best out of the situation.

That's why when they told Olivia that she could go home, she was very excited.

The plane ride back was uneventful, accept for her jittery nerves.

Her parents and brother were waiting at the gate for her. She hugged them all with a smile on her face. They said nothing to her.

At night when she was asleep, there was a knocking at her door. Emmet walked in, and he looked like he had been crying.

He told her that their parents were going to put her in the orphanage. Her told her they would come back for her, and if they didn't, then he would. Olivia was smiling the whole time, always the optimist.

_________

Olivia woke up with a start. She sat up in bed, breathing hard with her heart beating fast. The girl next to her woke up quickly too.

It was the girl who she had seen in the doorway at dinner, looking just as freaked out as Olivia. Olivia quickly composed herself, putting on a good face.

"You couldn't sleep either?" Olivia asked.

"... Something like that," she said.

"What's your name?" Olivia said, curious.

"It's Emma," Emma responds.

"I'm Olivia, but you can call me Liv for short," Olivia whispers, not wanting to be wake anyone up.

Emma smiles and says, "We better get to sleep."
