Amax watched as Moon giggled, her eyes lit with joy.
It had been seasons upon seasons since Blaze left, and Moon had just recently given birth to five pups. Four males and one female. All the sons had thick black coats, but the odd one out was the female, who had nice, glossy grey and white fur like her father.
His partner was playing with her pups carefully, her chest seeming to swell with pride. Amax was sat down beside her, watching as his sons climbed over their mother's back, while his single daughter sat proudly by Amax's side.
They had named their sons Conifer, Laurel, Cedar and Calyx, and their daughter Corolla.
He looked proudly at Calyx. There was something about him, something that reminded Amax when he was his age. It told him that maybe he'd be the one, the one after him.
It's too early to think about that.
Amax then heard aggressive barking and nervous yelps. Amax pricked his ears, his neck fur bushed up. He turned around.
"I'll be right back. Just in case, go to the back of the den with our pups, now!" Amax ordered.
Moon nodded and immediately picked up Corolla by her neck and scurried away, with her sons trotting beside her, looking confused. Calyx looked back over his shoulder once, and when he saw the look on his father's face, he turned and caught up with his mother. Amax bolted outside, scenting the air. He smelt something awful.
"What's happening?" Amax demanded as he came to a stop in front of Darksie.
"Some wolf is here, and she isn't normal, that's for sure!" She said, her eyes glimmering in the dark. She looked over her shoulder, her tail swishing side to side.
Amax pushed passed her and ran to the heart of the Residence.
A black wolf was standing in the middle of it, their teeth bared.
Wolves circled her, growling. Mortz showed his teeth, and Bluéda snarled. Pups peeked out of their den, but was shooed back in by their mothers.
Flame sat at the entrance to the Elders den and bared her teeth in return. Bescona was trying to yell something at them, but no one was listening.
"I'm here to see Amax, it's an emergency, so quit it!" She snapped. Amax immediately knew that ragged old voice!
He pushed his way through the crowd.
"Tyscol? What are you doing here?" He demanded, his voice deep and cold.
"You know her?" Loupe eyed him suspiciously.
"We met her when we went looking for Millie." Bescona, exhausted from yelling at everyone, gasped for air.
Hearing that, they all relaxed, stepping back.
"Tyscol, why are you here? What's the matter?" Amax suddenly felt an evil presence. The blind wolf scrambled over to him, her breath deep and shallow. He waited for her to speak.
She lifted her snout to his ear and whispered:
"The Sacred Shards have escaped!"
