I adjusted the collar of my crisp uniform as I navigated the crowded halls of the international school, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of languages and cultures. Each morning felt like entering a different world, where laughter and conversation danced in English, Mandarin, and Bengali, and I frequently lost myself in translation.I was surrounded by peers who seemed to embrace their identities with effortless confidence.
Suddenly, I collide with Nadia, a smaller figure who is my roommate, and friend. As we collide, we both fall to the ground. I look behind her to see none other than Adrien, and I realize I do not look particularly presentable on the ground.I quickly stand up, not taking my gaze away from him; after a few seconds, I realize I am gawking, and Nadia's face is still flat on the ground.
I hastily pull her up; her face is still red from the friction from the floor, and I assume mine is as well, which makes me want to sink into the ground or disintegrate. Either option sounds preferable to having Adrien, whose figure appears to be approaching me, watch my face plant into the ground.
"Chanelle, when you said you were going to hit me if I went back to Remy, I did not think you meant it literally," Nadia says, rubbing her forehead, which has turned a worrying shade of red.
Before I can respond, Adrien interrupts me; his tall figure towers over both me and Nadia; I am not sure how someone can look so good, especially under the school's fluorescent lighting, which just so happens to make me look like a fish gasping for air.
His eyes are a deep, ominous black that you could travel through for miles without finding an exit. His hair is a coffee brown that appears unusually soft, and the lighting reflected on him makes him look like the lead in a romantic film.
For a brief moment, I detect a hint of concern in his expression; even if he was, I am confident it was not for me.He must have noticed me studying his facial expression, because he quickly returns to his usual cold, nonchalant demeanor.Nadia finds it hot; I find it unbearable.
He opens his mouth to say something, but he's interrupted by the bell ringing aggressively. The sound is sharp and loud, the kind of noise that takes some getting used to.He walks past me, and Nadia rushes off to her class, leaving me in a sea of students.
