Injured reader!!
The Castle of Lions was a whirlwind of activity after the latest mission. The battle against the Galra had been brutal, and while the Voltron team had emerged victorious, the cost was high. Among the injured was you.
Pidge sprinted down the hallway, her heart pounding in her chest as she made her way to the medical bay. She had barely registered the chaos around her after the battle—her focus was solely on you. She had seen you go down during the fight, and the image of you collapsing replayed in her mind like a terrible loop.
When she burst into the medical bay, her breath came in quick gasps. Allura was tending to the wounded, and her eyes softened when she saw Pidge standing in the doorway, a mix of fear and determination in her green eyes.
"How is she?" Pidge asked, her voice shaky.
Allura motioned to the far end of the room, where you were lying on one of the medical cots, covered in a blanket with bandages wrapped around your torso. You were unconscious, but alive, breathing shallowly.
"She'll be okay," Allura reassured her. "The injuries are serious, but not life-threatening. She just needs rest and time to heal."
Pidge's shoulders slumped in relief as a wave of emotion crashed over her. You were okay. You were going to be okay. For a moment, she just stood there, staring at you, her mind still trying to process everything. She had come so close to losing you today, and the thought of that terrified her more than any battle with the Galra ever could.
Quietly, she walked over to your bedside and pulled up a chair. The medical bay hummed softly, but to Pidge, everything else faded away as she focused on you. You looked so peaceful now, your expression soft as you slept, but the sight of the bandages reminded her of how close she had come to losing you.
"I should have been there," she whispered to herself, her hands balling into fists on her lap. "I should have protected you."
She stayed by your side, barely moving, her heart heavy with guilt. It was only when your fingers twitched against the bed sheet that she realized you were waking up.
Your eyes fluttered open, and you groaned softly, your hand instinctively moving to your side where the injury was bandaged. You blinked a few times before your gaze landed on Pidge.
"Pidge?" you mumbled, your voice weak but steady.
"Hey," Pidge whispered, her eyes brightening as relief washed over her. "You're awake."
You gave her a tired smile, trying to sit up, but the pain in your side stopped you, and you winced.
"Hey, easy," Pidge said gently, placing her hand on your shoulder to stop you from moving too much. "You're hurt. You need to rest."
You looked at her, your expression softening. "I'll be fine, Pidge. I've survived worse."
Pidge bit her lip, clearly struggling to hold back her emotions. "I was so worried," she admitted, her voice breaking slightly. "I saw you get hit, and... I didn't know if you were going to make it."
Your smile faded as you saw the concern in her eyes. Pidge wasn't one to wear her emotions on her sleeve, but right now, the fear and guilt were all too clear. Reaching up slowly, you took her hand in yours, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Hey," you said softly, your voice still hoarse but filled with warmth. "I'm okay. You don't have to worry about me."
Pidge shook her head, her eyes misting over. "I should have been there. I should have done more to protect you."
"You can't control everything, Pidge," you whispered. "This fight... it's dangerous. But we're in this together. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
She looked down at your intertwined hands, her heart aching at how calm you were despite everything. How could you be so strong, so unshaken, after what had just happened? It was a strength that Pidge admired, even if she didn't fully understand it.
"I thought I'd lost you," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
You squeezed her hand again, a soft smile tugging at your lips despite the pain you were in. "You're not going to lose me. I promise."
Pidge exhaled slowly, her hand tightening around yours. She could feel the warmth of your skin, the reassurance in your touch, and for the first time since the battle, the tension in her chest began to ease.
"You're too important to me," Pidge finally admitted, her voice steady but filled with emotion. "I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you."
You stared at her for a moment, the weight of her words settling between you. You had always known there was something special between you and Pidge—a connection that went beyond simple friendship—but hearing her say it out loud like this made your heart skip a beat.
"I feel the same way," you whispered, your thumb brushing lightly over her knuckles. "I don't think I could handle losing you either."
Pidge's breath caught in her throat as she looked at you, really looked at you. The way your eyes held hers, the way your hand felt in hers—it was all so overwhelming, but in the best way. She had never been good at expressing her feelings, especially when they were this strong, but right now, with you lying here, vulnerable and hurt, she couldn't hold back any longer.
Leaning forward, she gently pressed her forehead against yours, closing her eyes as she let out a shaky breath. "I'm just so glad you're okay."
You smiled softly, the warmth of her touch grounding you, even in your weakened state. "Me too."
For a moment, the two of you stayed like that—your foreheads touching, your hands still clasped together, breathing in sync as the chaos of the universe seemed to fall away. There was something unspoken between you, a mutual understanding that words couldn't quite capture. Pidge had always been your rock, your closest ally, but this... this was something deeper. Something stronger.
When Pidge finally pulled back, her cheeks were tinged with a soft blush, and she cleared her throat, clearly trying to compose herself.
"Once you're all healed up," she said, her voice steadier now, "we're going to work on that project we talked about. You know, the cloaking tech for the Lions. I think I've figured out a way to make it more efficient."
You chuckled softly, wincing a little at the pain in your side. "Of course you did. You're a genius, Pidge."
She smiled, but there was a warmth in her eyes that wasn't there before. "Only when I've got a good partner."
Your heart swelled at her words, and despite the pain, you managed a grin. "I'll hold you to that."
The future battles ahead still loomed large, and the dangers you would face as a team were far from over. But in this moment, with Pidge by your side, you knew you could face anything. You weren't alone. You never would be.
As you drifted back to sleep, Pidge stayed by your side, her hand never leaving yours. She knew now, more than ever, that no matter what the galaxy threw at them, you would face it together.
And that was more than enough.
