The night sky stretched endlessly above, a blanket of glittering stars that seemed close enough to touch. You sat beside Pidge Gunderson on a grassy hill just outside the Castle of Lions, the cool breeze tugging at your jacket. She was hunched over a portable computer, her eyes bright with excitement as she coded something new into the tiny robot between you. It was supposed to be a simple date—a moment to relax and stargaze—but with Pidge, nothing was ever that simple."You know, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I asked you to hang out tonight," you said, half-joking as you nudged her gently.
Pidge smirked, her green eyes glowing in the dim light of the screen. "Come on, you knew what you were getting into," she teased, fingers still tapping away at lightning speed. "Besides, I promise it'll be cool when it's done. Trust me."
You couldn't help but smile. Pidge always had that effect on you. Her passion was contagious, and while you'd originally planned for a quiet night of watching the stars, you knew that Pidge's version of a perfect evening was bound to involve some sort of tech. And honestly, you were okay with that.
"What exactly are you making this time?" you asked, leaning in closer. The small robot, barely bigger than your hand, had an intricate design, and its circuits flickered under Pidge's skillful touch.
"It's a mini-explorer bot," she said proudly, her eyes never leaving the screen. "Once I'm done with the final coding, it'll map out the constellations in real-time, overlaying them with known star systems. It'll be like having a pocket-sized astronomer with us." She paused and grinned. "Cool, right?"
"Yeah, actually, that's pretty awesome," you admitted, genuinely impressed. It was so Pidge—a little chaotic, a lot brilliant. You leaned back, looking up at the sky, letting the quiet moments stretch between you. "You ever miss Earth? Like, just lying out in the backyard and staring at the stars?"
Pidge hesitated, her fingers slowing over the keyboard. "Sometimes. I used to do that with my brother and dad. We'd spend hours just... dreaming. Talking about space, about aliens." She laughed softly, though there was a sadness there too. "Now I'm actually here in space, and sometimes I think they'd never believe me."
You shifted closer, sensing the weight in her voice. "I'm sure they would. They'd be proud of you, Pidge. You've done more than most people could even dream of."
Her smile was soft this time, the bravado slipping for a moment. "Thanks." She finished the last line of code, then shut the computer with a decisive click. "There. It's ready." She set the small robot on the ground between you, flipping a switch. It buzzed to life, small lights glowing as it began to scan the sky.
Together, you watched in quiet awe as the robot projected constellations onto the grass around you, a sea of stars and digital lines connecting them. Each formation was marked with names and distances, facts about the far-off systems. It was breathtaking.
"You know," Pidge said after a few moments, her voice soft, "sometimes I forget to just... stop and look. I'm always so focused on what's next, on fixing things, on finding my family, that I don't really take time to appreciate where I am."
"That's what I'm here for," you said gently, nudging her shoulder with yours. "To remind you to breathe. And maybe to look at the stars every now and then."
She glanced at you, her expression softer now, more open than you were used to seeing. "You're pretty good at that," she admitted. "At keeping me grounded." There was a pause before she added, almost shyly, "I'm glad you're here with me."
Your heart skipped a beat at her words, and you smiled, feeling a warmth spread through you despite the cool air. "Me too, Pidge."
For a while, you just sat there together in comfortable silence, watching the stars—both real and projected—dancing around you. You didn't need to say much more. In this moment, you were exactly where you were meant to be.
And for Pidge, that was enough.
