Aurelia didn't want to sleep tonight. Not after what had happened. But her exhaustion was relentless, dragging her closer to the abyss with every passing minute.

Her eyelids grew heavy, her body sinking into the bed, the sheets clinging to her skin as if trying to hold her down. The dread of what was waiting for her on the other side of sleep gnawed at her, but she couldn't fight it any longer. The pull of sleep was too strong, dragging her down, down, into the waiting jaws of Aetherra once more.

When her eyes opened, she found herself standing in the middle of a desolate town. The air was thick and oppressive, the atmosphere heavy with an eerie stillness. It was the kind of quiet that pressed on the ears, making every sound, no matter how small, feel like an intrusion. The streets were paved with cracked brick, jagged lines cutting through the stone like scars. Iron streetlamps, their tops crowned with flickering candles, lined the road like forgotten sentinels. The dim glow they cast barely pierced the dense fog, which hung like a thick curtain, muffling everything.

The mist was suffocating, clinging to her skin like damp fingers, making it hard to breathe. She glanced up at the dim sky, but there were no stars. No moon. Only the swirling grey fog that seemed to devour everything in its path.

Aurelia's footsteps echoed unnaturally loud in the silence as she took a few tentative steps forward. The sound felt wrong—like it didn't belong to her, as though something or someone else was walking beside her.

The buildings that lined the street were old, but not crumbling. They stood tall, frozen in time, as if their inhabitants had vanished in the blink of an eye, leaving everything behind. Windows hung open, dark and empty like gaping mouths, their shutters swaying in the breeze, letting out a faint creak. Every now and then, she caught a glimpse of movement—just out of the corner of her eye—but when she turned to look, there was nothing. Only the fog, curling and shifting, as though alive.

Something wasn't right.

Aurelia stopped in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat. She couldn't put her finger on it at first, but the gnawing feeling of unease clawed at her mind. She could feel it—something watching her, eyes following her every move. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end, and her skin prickled as if the very air around her was charged with static. She wanted to turn around, to run, but her legs felt heavy, rooted to the spot.

A soft shiver ran down her spine.

She moved further into the heart of the town, her footfalls growing more erratic, as if her body could sense something before her mind could fully register it. At first, she thought it was just the uneven cobblestone beneath her feet, but then the realization hit her like ice water: the footsteps weren't hers.

There were more.

Her heart thudded painfully in her chest as she stopped again, this time listening, really listening. The echoing sound of footsteps lingered for a heartbeat longer, fading into the fog. She spun around, eyes wide, scanning the empty street, but saw nothing. Only the thick, swirling mist, shifting with every gust of wind.

Her breath came in short, sharp bursts, and she could feel her pulse in her throat, the cold sweat sliding down her back. She needed to move. She needed to leave this place.

With renewed urgency, she pushed herself forward, forcing her feet to move, to carry her away from whatever was lurking in the fog. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, but no matter how fast she walked, that gnawing feeling stayed with her—the feeling of being hunted.

Ahead of her, barely visible through the fog, a playground appeared. The rusted swings swayed gently in the breeze, their chains groaning with each slow, labored movement. An ancient schoolhouse stood just beyond the playground, its wooden facade weathered and beaten by time. The roof sagged, its once vibrant paint peeling away in thick, curling strips.
