As soon as there was a knock on the door in the evening, Daisy got up from her study table, stood by the door, and thought,
-- Who could it be now? Is it Zayn? (Thinking that, Daisy swallowed hard and opened the door.)
Her fear came true. It was Zayn.
As soon as Zayn saw Daisy opening the door, he looked at her and asked in a concerned voice,
-- Daisy, are you okay now? Has the headache subsided? Did you take your medicine? (Zayn)
-- How am I supposed to answer so many questions at once?? Besides, will you keep standing outside or come in? (Daisy)
As Zayn entered the room, he noticed that the study table still had books open in front of it.
-- Were you studying? Why are you even trying to study with your headache? (Zayn)
-- You’ve been asking nonstop questions since you came! Won’t you give me a chance to respond? (Daisy)
Zayn went silent and just looked at her.
-- Besides, my headache was mild. It’s somewhat better now. And I have exams coming up and also need to submit my project. I can’t use these minor headaches as an excuse now. (Daisy)
-- That makes sense. (Zayn)
-- Has your grandpa left? (Daisy)
-- No. He’s staying for a few days. You’re busy, so focus on your work. (Zayn)
-- You didn’t mind that I couldn’t visit in the morning, and still haven’t...? (Daisy)
-- Oh no, don’t worry about that. It’s not a big deal. I just came to check if you’re feeling okay, that’s all. (Zayn)
-- Thank you for coming. (Daisy)
-- Why are you thanking me? Didn’t you say that not all actions are done to receive thanks? (Zayn)
-- You’re using my own lines against me now! (Daisy)
Both Daisy and Zayn smiled. After he left, Daisy breathed a sigh of relief.
-- Uh! Managed to get through today, but what about tomorrow? What will happen then? He’s still going to be here for a few days. I know it’s not the end of the world if I face him, but still! Zayn will think I’ve been hiding such a big truth from him. What if he gets mad about it? Ugh! No point overthinking. Whatever happens, happens!
With that, Daisy focused back on her work.Night had fallen. After finishing her work, she stepped out to the balcony for a breath of fresh air.
The soft moonlight bathed the balcony. The bluish tint of the sky reflected on the jasmine plant that Zayn had given her. Buds had started to bloom on the plant. Daisy gently touched them and then leaned on the railing. From here, she could see a large part of the city. The magical lines of light seemed to disrupt the serenity of the quiet night.
The day’s echoes of chaos hadn’t entirely faded. A few vehicles were still speeding down the road. The calm, still sky was watching everything like an enthralled audience at an exciting theater.
The moon was half-visible, the other half hidden behind dark clouds.
Suddenly, she felt like reflecting on her own life. All day, she listens to people's problems and tries her best to solve them. But no one knows the circumstances from which she emerged to start this work. Only she and Erica knew about that. One of Daisy's bad habits is talking to herself, something many of us do. Some only do it occasionally, while others only when they’re sad!
-- Isn’t it strange? When I was a child, I used to see my parents fighting and arguing all the time, and I would think, what kind of a household is this? A place where two people are staying together just out of obligation. But the most painful realization was knowing that my sister and I were merely mistakes in their lives. Two mistakes that happened just to fulfill their needs. And me! After my mother died, my father threw me out, and I ended up at my aunt's place as a burden. That was when my aunt became desperate to get rid of me. She tried to send me away, but my sister? She was the only one who held me close at that time. My aunt didn’t even hesitate to hit her, teaming up with her lover to harm her. That was when my sister left, taking me with her. She shielded me with everything she had. Together, the two of us built our little world, searching for the fireflies of happiness.
Today, so many people seek my words to try to bring themselves back into the fight for survival, and yet I, the one who speaks so much, couldn’t apply any of it to my own life. Maybe that’s why I’m standing here today. If I had everything, perhaps I wouldn’t have reached this point. The kind of love I saw in movies as a child can never exist in reality. Everywhere around me, I see separation and breakups. In the midst of this, what I feel for him might just be a fondness. If it goes further, I may lose myself in the current and never be able to bring myself back to shore. It’s better to stay as I am.
Bringing him into my world might just bring more sorrow.
But why is it that even when we know that some people will never be ours, we still grow weak for them? Why don’t we save our love for those who actually love us?
Why can’t we love and stay happy?
Why!
She kept talking to herself like this.
The breeze gently swayed the jasmine buds, keeping many unspoken words to itself.
It whispered,
"You have always been so tough
That no one can see your home drift away.
They can’t understand your hidden mind.
They don’t know the colors of your heart."To be continued...
