(set after botw)(Link's POV)
Link remembered when he first woke up and every night was scary. The monsters came crawling for him when he least expected and he had to always watch for his back. He had quickly learned to wake up at the slightest sound and only sleep at places where he had killed all the monsters.
That had changed after the first blood moon. When he had woken up during an unusually good dream, to the sound of Zelda's panicked voice telling him that the monsters were resurrected, he felt like Hylia herself was just mocking him now.
After that he had been afraid to go to sleep in the wilderness for a while. Too scared to wake up to Zelda's message to sleep outside.
It took him quite a while but he finally got the idea that the blood moon would only happen once a month. He started counting days and always at the end of the month, he'd sleep at a stable or a village for the next couple of nights.
That went on and on until Link defeated the Calamity Ganon.
Zelda had reassured to him that there'd be no more blood moons after that, but for some reason Link found it hard to believe.
So when the calendar marked the last of the month again, Link got anxious again. Thoughts like 'what if Zelda was wrong' and 'I have to protect them if it comes again' were running through his head the entire day. The others had noticed this of course. Daruk had at their lunch, loudly asked him: "Lil guy! You seem a bit stressed, are you okay?" That had gotten everyone's attention, much to Link's annoyance. He had quickly dismissed Daruk by assuring him that he was fine. Spoiler alert, he was not.
Mipha was the next to question his odd behaviour, when she suddenly sat in front of him on the sofa, while he was busy checking the sheikah slate for anything weird.
"Link, you seem a bit distant today. I know you said that you were fine but you can talk to us if you're not." Mipha offered gently.
Again Link had just said he was fine and continued looking at his slate after moving outside.
Urbosa didn't really say anything but he could almost feel the looks of concern she was giving him when she thought he couldn't notice.
At dinner even Revali had showed concern on his own very Revali-ish style, by screaming at him.
"What is wrong with you today!?" Revali had asked frustrated because Link wouldn't answer anything. Not that it was unusual of him.
When the sun came down, they could all hear Link opening the door. He had just thrown a quick 'going out for a while' sign at them and left. They all found that pretty concerning since Link barely signed anymore. At least not with them.
Mipha had already gotten up preparing to go talk to Link, when Zelda rose up."I've got it." She said quickly before going after Link.
.....................................................................
Link could hear footsteps coming behind him. He knew that those were Zelda's footsteps since he had learned to recognize all of their footsteps, in case it would ever be needed.
'figured you'd be the next to show up. The others tried already.' Link signed. 'I'm fine, If that's what you're here for.' he added.
"I know what day it is." Zelda said softly."I keep thinking about it too." she continued silently sitting next to Link.
Link let out a quiet "mmm" but didn't say anything else.
"You know, it really is gone. Ganon I mean. And with him went away all his power as well. That includes the blood moons as well." she said fidgetting with the grass. "But I understand that it may not fell like it yet." she added softly, leaning her head on Link's shoulder.
"I just want to make sure that it's really gone." Link said quietly. "It doesn't feel real yet and I'd never forgive myself if something were to happen to you all." he said voice trailing off.
"I know Link, but we're all alright. You've got nothing to worry about." Zelda whispered to him.
They wached together as the moon rose to it's highest peak and the clock on the sheikah slate showed 0.00. The moon was still sliver and the air around the didn't feel suffocating.
Link found himself finally at peace, Zelda's soft breahing slowly evening in and out. He let himself drift out of consciousness as well because after all, the sky wouldn't turn red again, and he knew he wouldn't have to wake up panicked ever again.
So what did you all think :)
