Win was unsettled, his mind restless. He was married to Natalie, and though they had no children, their life together was content. Bright, his greatest friend, was someone he'd met at work years ago. Bright, too, was married—his wife, Aleeta, had been with him for many years now. But despite everything, Win had harbored a secret love for Bright from the very beginning. He could never confess it—it was too complicated, too dangerous, as Bright had already been married when they met.
Over the years, their families had grown close, and today Bright and Aleeta were visiting Win's home. Win's heart raced as he anticipated seeing Bright after six long months. His phone rang, and it was him.
"Hi Win, we're here," Bright said cheerfully.
"Oh, okay. I'll open the gate," Win replied, trying to steady his voice.
Moments later, the two couples greeted each other warmly. Aleeta joined Natalie, and Win stood by Bright's car, watching him step out.
"Hello, my friend!" Bright said, embracing Win in a firm hug. Win melted into the embrace, his emotions overwhelming him as Bright's strong hands held him. Win felt cold, paralyzed by the weight of his unspoken feelings.
"Hey, are you okay?" Bright asked, sensing something was off in Win's silence.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Win muttered, though his heart told another story.
The two sat in the garden, sharing coffee and snacks. Bright tried to make small talk. "So, how's life?" But Win couldn't find the words. For 20 years, his love for Bright had been buried deep inside, growing stronger with each passing day, suffocating him. He wanted to tell Bright everything, but fear held him back.
Bright noticed the change in Win's demeanor. Scooting closer, he placed a comforting hand on Win's shoulder. "Win, are you sure you're okay? You seem distracted, and you look pale."
"I'm fine, Bright. Just a headache. It'll pass," Win tried to smile, but his nervous fingers betrayed him. Bright could feel Win's rapid heartbeat. Something was definitely wrong.
"Win, you're shivering. Do you want me to call Natalie?" Bright asked softly, growing concerned.
"No, don't," Win snapped, then immediately regretted it. Bright got down on his knees, holding Win's arms gently.
"Please, tell me what's bothering you. You can trust me," Bright said, his voice full of concern.
Win sighed heavily. How could he possibly tell Bright the truth? That he had loved him all this time, even now, while living a life with someone else?
Finally, Win gathered the courage to speak. "Bright... this is a confession I've wanted to make for years, but I never had the chance. I can't keep it inside anymore. It's killing me."
Bright's eyes widened in surprise. "Win, you know you can tell me anything. What is it?"
Win cupped Bright's face, his hands trembling. "Please... don't hate me."
Confusion washed over Bright's face. "Hate you? Why would I ever hate you? Just tell me."
Taking a deep breath, Win sniffled, his voice breaking. "I've had these feelings for 20 years, Bright. I know we're both married, but love can't be forced. I... I love you. From the moment I met you, I was drawn to you. I wanted to be near you, to be with you. You've always been there for me, caring for me. I'm happiest when I'm with you.
"At first, I didn't understand it, but after marrying Natalie, I realized that my heart and soul don't belong with her—they belong with you. I can't be unfair to Natalie anymore, but I can't give her the life she deserves. I can't give her children, because... I'm consumed by you. Every moment, my mind is with you. I love you so much, Bright. If I don't get to be with you in this life, then please, let me be with you in the next. I want us to have our happy ending..."
As Win's confession spilled out, he broke down in sobs. Bright stood up, running his hands through his hair, clearly shaken. He made frustrated, incoherent sounds, trying to process what he'd just heard.
After what felt like an eternity, Win whispered, "Bright... please say something."
Bright looked at him, seeing his best friend in a completely different light. Win had been loyal, a friend he cherished deeply. But now, he saw the vulnerability in Win's tear-streaked face, his swollen lips from crying, his pale skin that seemed to crave affection. Those dark eyes, brimming with emotion, seemed to pull Bright in, yet it all felt so overwhelming.
Snapping his head away, Bright forced himself to focus. He cleared his throat, finally finding his voice. "Win... this is a lot. I—I don't even know what to say. I'm married to Aleeta, and I'm so sorry if I unintentionally made you feel this way. I really am. But... you have to move on. You have to find a way to live your life with Natalie. If... if it's too hard, tell me, and I won't come around anymore. I'll stop contacting you. But we can't abandon our wives, Win. It would be wrong."
Win nodded through his tears, his heart breaking. "But, Bright... can I ask one favor?"
Bright looked at him, hesitant but willing to listen. "What is it?"
