The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden hue across the forest as Brightbill and Bambi walked side by side, away from the waterfall and the cave they had discovered earlier with Luke. The air was still, peaceful, the only sounds being the occasional rustle of leaves and the quiet bubbling of the stream nearby.
Brightbill fluttered his wings as he landed gently on the ground next to Bambi, walking alongside him now. There was a comfortable silence between them, but Brightbill noticed the way Bambi's head hung a little lower than usual, the way his hooves moved slowly, almost as if weighed down by something.
"You okay, Bambi?" Brightbill asked gently, his beady eyes filled with concern. "You've been quiet since we left the cave."
Bambi hesitated for a moment, his ears twitching as he glanced at Brightbill. "I... I'm okay," he said softly, though it was clear in his voice that something was bothering him.
Brightbill gave him a knowing look, stopping in his tracks. "Come on, Bambi. We've been friends long enough for me to know when something's on your mind."
Bambi slowed to a stop, the weight of his unspoken thoughts suddenly feeling too heavy to carry alone. He glanced down at the ground, the words swirling inside him, but they felt stuck, as if admitting them would make everything more real.
"I don't know how to say it," Bambi whispered, his voice barely audible over the gentle breeze. "It's just... sometimes I feel like I don't belong."
Brightbill's expression softened, his heart aching for his friend. "What do you mean? You belong with us—with Luke and me. We're a team, Bambi."
Bambi looked up, his eyes full of unshed tears. "I know that... but I still feel lost sometimes. I'm supposed to be brave, like my dad, and strong... but there are days when I just feel scared. Like I'm not enough."
Brightbill stepped closer, his wings gently brushing against Bambi's side in a comforting gesture. "It's okay to feel scared, Bambi. We all get scared sometimes. That doesn't make you any less brave."
Bambi's voice wavered as he continued. "But it's not just fear... it's more than that. I miss my mom. Every day, I think about her, and no matter how much time passes, it still hurts."
The tears that had been threatening to fall finally spilled over, and Bambi lowered his head, his small body trembling with the weight of his grief. Brightbill watched him for a moment, his own heart aching for his friend. He wasn't sure what to say, but he knew that sometimes words weren't what mattered most—just being there did.
Brightbill moved even closer, gently resting his head against Bambi's, his feathers brushing against the soft fur of Bambi's neck. "I'm so sorry, Bambi," he whispered. "I didn't know how much you were hurting."
Bambi closed his eyes, leaning into the comforting touch. "I try not to show it. I don't want Luke or you to worry about me... but sometimes it's too much. It feels like no one can understand what it's like."
Brightbill sighed softly, his voice quiet but filled with warmth. "I may not know exactly how you feel, Bambi... but I do understand loss. My family's gone too. And I know that no matter how strong we try to be, that emptiness never really goes away."
Bambi looked up at Brightbill, his eyes wide with surprise. "You lost your family?"
Brightbill nodded, his gaze distant for a moment as he remembered. "Yeah. It was a long time ago, but it still hurts sometimes. I've learned that it's okay to miss them. And it's okay to talk about it when you're feeling sad. You don't have to carry all that weight alone."
Bambi sniffled, wiping away his tears with his hoof. "I didn't know you felt that way too."
Brightbill smiled softly, his eyes kind. "That's the thing, Bambi. We're all carrying something. But when we share it with each other, it doesn't feel as heavy. You've got Luke, and you've got me. We'll be here whenever you need us, okay?"
Bambi nodded, feeling a warmth spread through his chest. It was comforting to know that he wasn't as alone in his feelings as he thought. "Thanks, Brightbill. I didn't realize how much I needed to talk about this."
Brightbill gave him a gentle nudge with his beak, his tone lightening. "Hey, that's what friends are for. You don't always have to be strong, Bambi. Sometimes being brave means letting yourself be vulnerable."
Bambi smiled through his tears, a soft laugh escaping him. "You're pretty wise for a goose, you know that?"
Brightbill chuckled, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Well, I have my moments."
The two of them stood together for a while longer, watching as the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the forest in a soft, peaceful glow. The weight that Bambi had been carrying didn't feel so overwhelming anymore, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like he could breathe a little easier.
"I'm glad I have you and Luke," Bambi said quietly, his voice filled with gratitude. "You make everything feel a little less scary."
Brightbill's heart warmed at Bambi's words, and he gave a soft, contented sigh. "And I'm glad I have you, Bambi. We're in this together."
As the night settled around them, they turned and made their way back toward their camp, side by side. The adventure had brought them closer, but this moment—this shared vulnerability—had strengthened their bond in a way that only true friendship could.
