That year's Christmas night had been expecially cold.

Snowflakes swirled in the freezing wind as children enjoyed their time under that white sky, laughter spilling out like water from a fountain.

Hwang Hyunjin would always remember that day.

Not because of the presents.
Not because of an expecially good dessert.
Not for the warm crackling of the fireplace or the solace brought by hot cocoa.

None of that.

As everyone celebrated, clueless and happy, Hyunjin cradled a body in his arms.

His sobs so violent they shook his body to the point where he fell to his knees into the snow.

It felt so cold.
He barely noticed.

"Niki..." he sobbed:

"Ye- Yeji..."

Snot and tears tinted his cheeks down to his lips.

In his mind a dark storm thundered, lightning blinding his eyes.

A trembling hand clutched the cross at his neck.

"I didn't mean..." he sobbed again:

"It was a mistake..."

His brother's lips didn't move to answer.
His cold hand didn't raise to wipe the tears off his cheeks.

And Yeji. She didn't run to help either.

The situation felt so surreal, Hyunjin didn't know how to process it.

"It wasn't supposed to go this way..."

"He's dead. My brother is dead. Niki is dead. He's dead, he'a dead, he's dead-"

Hyunjin's breath stuttered as he stared at those blank eyes, at the small river of purple dripping down his mouth.

"And it's all my fault."

The thought that took form in his brain next was a dark but logical one.

He, Hwang Hyunjin, didn't deserve to live.

"That's right. How could I even imagine going on this way! I can't!"

he thought, slightly delirious.

But how to end it all?

Just as he pondered his options, shaking with fear and resolve, a small swish of warmth hit his back.

Instinctively he turned, hands outstretched to protect his brother's body.

What he saw shook him to the core.

An angel stared back at him.

"Be not afraid, young man" the creature stated, voice deep and echoing:
"I'm here to help"

Hyunjin's breath caught.
His heart missed several beats.
His fingers clutched his cross so hard it drew blood.

"Don't do it." the angel said.

Hyunjin couldn't even find the energy in him to nod.

Its body swirled golden and white, immaterial in its glory. It emanated such warmth the snow around it started melting. It had a somewhat humanoid form, with gigantic wings exploding from its back. Where its face was supposed to be, three pairs of eyes stared unblinking at Hyunjin as there were no lids or lashes in sight. On the top of its head two protrusions reached for eachother, creating a half halo around its temples.

"A real angel..." Hyunjin thought in awe:
"So it was all real... Oh, thank God..."

He lowered his head and bowed low to the being.

"You're freezing, poor kid..." the angel stated and suddenly Hyunjin was basked in warmth:

"There..."

Was the angel... hugging him?

It was so warm... and comforting...
Hyunjin would have loved to stay that way for ever...

"The Lord is proud of you" the angel whispered, holding him close to its immaterial body:

"You've gone through the trial and never lost faith...you did well, kid..."

"Ah... so it was a trial... so it happened for a reason... it's not my fault..."

Tears of relief dropped on Hyunjin's cheeks as a small, pained smile opened his lips.

"You've been chosen for a noble mission, Hwang Hyunjin... There's so much evil in this world... and you... you can help cleanse some of it..."

"Purpose..." Hyunjin was clinging to the being's every word.

"Don't worry... I'll take care of your siblings...you'll see them again sooner than you think..."

Hyunjin thought of his brother's big smiles.
Of his sister's endeared expressions.

"I'll dedicate it all to them. I'll prove it wasn't all in vain."

Resolve filled his soul and he stated:

"Your word is my order, messanger of The Lord."
