It looks unlikely that the Lucknow Super Giants would keep skipper KL Rahul, who has led the team since the 2022 Indian Premier League, and he is expected to bid in the forthcoming mega auction before the 2025 season.

Will Rahul remain a member of LSG's roster? Is he not interested in remaining with the team? Will they retain him without elevating him to captain? Following their first two seasons of qualifying for the playoffs, LSG's seventh-place result in the 2024 Indian Premier League sparked some of these inquiries.

Rahul has been the leading scorer for LSG for three seasons. Before suffering an injury that kept him out of the second half of the 2023 season, he was the second-highest run scorer in the IPL 2022 with 616 runs. However, in 2024, he again led LSG in scoring with 520 runs. Rahul has always scored a lot of runs, but his strike rate 136.12 in the 2024 Indian Premier League—has drawn criticism frequently, particularly given the league's significantly greater scoring rates over the past two seasons.

Following LSG's humbling loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad the previous season, owner Sanjeev Goenka was spotted chatting animatedly with Rahul on the pitch. Though the LSG owner is thought to have told the team that he was dissatisfied by the way the club lost against SRH, his conversation with Rahul was friendly, Goenka's interaction with Rahul, which was seen on television, sparked rumors about Rahul's future.

Goenka referred to Rahul as "family" during an August event in Kolkata to introduce former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as LSG's trainer, but he was evasive about player retention.

It is known that Rahul did not promise to accept a retention offer during a recent discussion with LSG's owners. According to information obtained by ESPNcricinfo, a definitive decision will be made in a few days.

The deadline for the ten teams to submit their lists of retained players to the IPL is October 31. Prior to the 2025 season's massive auction, the teams are permitted to keep up to six players, of whom no more than five may be capped internationals.
