You knew going into this mission that things would be complicated. Being a pilot and Jake Seresin's girlfriend meant that there were always eyes on you, both in the skies and on the ground. When you got called up to join the same mission as Jake, the two of you had no choice but to keep your relationship a secret.

The team couldn't know. Command couldn't know. But that didn't make it any easier.

As you stepped into the briefing room, Jake was already there, leaning casually against the wall with his trademark cocky grin in place. His eyes flicked to you for just a moment, a subtle glint of affection that only you would notice, before he looked away, pretending nothing was out of the ordinary.

You shot him a quick smile, but you knew the rules—you couldn't linger too long or do anything that might give you away. Everyone was on high alert, and the last thing either of you needed was to attract unnecessary attention.

"Alright, everyone!" Cyclone called, his voice cutting through the quiet murmurs. "Let's get started."

You took a seat a few rows away from Jake, doing your best to focus on the briefing. But even though you were separated, you could feel Jake's presence in the room like a magnet, pulling at your attention. It wasn't easy keeping things professional when all you wanted to do was steal a glance, or worse, sit beside him like any normal couple.

But you couldn't. Not here.

As the briefing wrapped up, the squad dispersed, heading toward the hangar to prepare for the day's exercises. You were talking with Natasha "Phoenix" Trace and Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw when someone else approached. A pilot you hadn't worked with before—Lt. Callahan—strode over, a charming smile plastered on his face.

"Y/N, right?" Callahan asked, his eyes sweeping over you with a little too much interest. "I've heard a lot about you. Pretty impressive to be called in for this mission."

You nodded, keeping it professional. "Thanks. It's good to be here."

Callahan didn't take the hint. "I gotta say, it's not every day you see a pilot who looks as good in a flight suit as you do." He grinned, clearly pleased with himself.

You forced a smile, glancing around quickly to see if anyone else was noticing the exchange. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Jake standing with Javy, his jaw visibly tightening.

"Uh, thanks," you said, trying to brush it off. "I guess I'll take that as a compliment."

"Definitely a compliment," Callahan continued, stepping a little too close for comfort. "Maybe after the mission's over, you and I could grab a drink or something. Get to know each other better."

Before you could respond, you saw Jake's shoulders stiffen, his hands curling into fists at his sides. He was trying—really trying—to keep his cool, but you knew that look. He was seconds away from snapping.

You were about to politely decline Callahan's offer, but before you could get the words out, Jake appeared at your side, his expression hard and unreadable.

"Callahan," Jake said, his voice a little too smooth, a little too calm. "Got a minute? We need to discuss something."

Callahan looked between you and Jake, clearly oblivious to the tension. "Uh, sure. I guess."

Jake's eyes flicked to you for the briefest second, silently asking if you were okay. You gave him a small nod, hoping he'd let it go.

But you knew Jake. And letting things go was not something he did easily.

As Callahan walked away, Jake lingered just long enough to mutter, "We're not done with this," before following the other pilot.

Later that evening, you were sitting in the mess hall with Phoenix and some of the other pilots, doing your best to keep your mind off the earlier incident. But every time you looked up, you could feel Jake's eyes on you from across the room, the tension between you thick and suffocating.

And then, it happened again.

Callahan approached, all smiles and confidence, as if Jake hadn't just stared him down earlier. He leaned casually against the table, making sure to stand right in front of you.

"Y/N, I was thinking about what I said earlier," Callahan started, his voice smooth. "I really think we should—"

"You really shouldn't."

Jake's voice cut through the air like a knife. He was standing right behind Callahan, his eyes dark with barely-contained anger.

Callahan blinked, looking back at Jake. "What? Just having a conversation here, Seresin."

Jake's smile was sharp, dangerous. "Yeah, and I'm about to have a conversation with you. Step outside, Callahan."

The mess hall went quiet. Every eye was on the two of them now, but you barely noticed. All you could focus on was the way Jake's entire body seemed coiled, ready to explode.

"Jake," you said softly, trying to deescalate the situation. "It's fine."

But it wasn't fine. Not for Jake. Not when he'd watched someone flirt with you all day, pretending it didn't bother him.

"No, it's not fine," Jake said, his voice dangerously low. "Because Callahan here seems to think it's okay to make moves on someone who's already taken."

Callahan looked genuinely confused. "Wait, what? Taken?"

Jake's eyes never left Callahan's, but his voice softened when he spoke again. "Y/N's with me."

Your heart dropped into your stomach at his words. There it was—out in the open for everyone to hear.

Callahan raised his hands in surrender. "Hey, man, I didn't know."

"Well, now you do," Jake replied, his voice sharp.

Callahan took the hint and backed off quickly, disappearing into the crowd as the mess hall erupted in whispers and hushed conversations. Jake stood there, his breathing heavy, clearly trying to calm himself down.

You stood up, walking over to him, your heart racing. "Jake..."

"I'm sorry," he muttered, running a hand through his hair. "I tried to keep it together, but I couldn't stand it anymore. Watching him hit on you, knowing I can't—"

You silenced him with a soft touch to his arm. "Jake, it's okay."

He looked at you, his eyes full of frustration and guilt. "I didn't mean to put us on blast like that, but I couldn't—"

"I know," you interrupted, giving him a small smile. "I get it."

Jake sighed, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "Guess we're not a secret anymore, huh?"

You chuckled softly. "Not really."

He shook his head, a faint grin tugging at his lips. "Well, I guess it's about time. Can't keep watching guys flirt with you. Not when you're mine."

Your heart swelled at his words, and despite the attention of everyone around you, you leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek. "I'm yours, Jake. Always."

He smiled, his cocky confidence returning. "Damn right, you are."
