The cold light of the Dauntless compound flickered eerily as you walked through the dim halls, your heart racing. The world had changed overnight—after everyone had been injected with the serum. But you had quickly realized something was wrong. While others were mindlessly following orders, you were wide awake, aware. You were Divergent. You kept your head down, moving through the compound, trying to blend in with the rest of the Dauntless soldiers. They were in a trance, their eyes blank as they marched toward their next directive. You weren't sure what to do—where to run. But you knew one thing for certain: if they found out you weren't like them, you wouldn't survive.
Then, you felt a strong hand grab your arm and pull you into a shadowy corner. You almost screamed, but a hand clamped over your mouth. When you looked up, your eyes met Peter Hayes'. His icy gaze bore into you, but there was something different about him. He wasn't like the others—he was awake.
"Peter," you whispered once he removed his hand, your heart pounding in your chest. "You're awake. How are you awake?"
He pressed a finger to his lips, glancing around to ensure no one was nearby. "I don't know how, but I am," he muttered, his voice low. "And so are you."
You nodded, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on you. "Peter, we have to get out of here. We can't—"
"I know what you are," he interrupted, his voice sharper now. "You're Divergent."
The air between you grew thick with tension. Your stomach twisted into knots as you waited for him to decide if you were worth saving or betraying.
Peter's eyes searched yours, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then, in an almost inaudible voice, he said, "I won't let them take you."
You blinked, startled. This was Peter—ruthless, cunning Peter. The same Peter who had laughed at your failures, the same Peter who had always put his own survival first. And now... now he was willing to help you?
"Why?" you asked, your voice trembling. "Why are you doing this?"
"I don't know," he admitted, his jaw clenched. "Maybe because if I let you die, I'd be just like the rest of them. And I'm not. I won't be."
A heavy silence fell between you as his words sank in. He wasn't lying, and that terrified you almost as much as the serum. Before you could respond, loud footsteps echoed down the hall. Someone was coming.
Peter grabbed your hand, pulling you deeper into the shadows. "Come on," he urged. "We need to move. Fast."
You ran together, dodging Dauntless soldiers as they passed, completely unaware of your presence. Peter led you through the maze of tunnels, his grip on your hand firm and unwavering. You weren't sure where he was taking you, but you trusted him—for now.
Finally, you reached a hidden alcove far from the others. Peter pulled you inside and pressed you against the wall, his body shielding yours as he peered out, checking if anyone had followed. Once satisfied that you were safe for the moment, he turned to face you.
"You need to keep quiet," he said, his voice low. "They're looking for any sign of Divergence, and if they find out about you..."
"I know," you whispered, your chest tight with fear. "But what are we going to do, Peter? We can't just hide forever."
His expression darkened, and for the first time, you saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. He was always so sure of himself, so confident in his own survival instincts. But now, faced with the reality of protecting you, even he seemed unsure.
"I'll figure something out," he said finally, his voice hardening again. "But you have to trust me."
Before you could respond, a voice called out from the entrance to the alcove. "Peter? What the hell are you doing here?"
Your heart sank as you recognized the voice—Eric. One of Peter's closest friends. And one of the most ruthless leaders of Dauntless.
Peter stepped in front of you, blocking Eric's view of you entirely. "Nothing. Just needed a break from the mindless zombies."
Eric chuckled darkly, his eyes narrowing as he stepped closer. "Really? Because it looks like you're hiding something."
Peter's stance stiffened, and you could see the tension in his muscles as he prepared for a confrontation. You wanted to run, to escape, but there was no way out without being seen.
Eric's gaze flickered over Peter's shoulder, and his eyes widened as he saw you. "Oh, I see. Protecting a Divergent, huh?" He sneered, drawing a weapon from his belt. "You know what happens to Divergents, Peter. You can't save her."
Peter's hand shot out, grabbing Eric by the throat and slamming him against the wall. "I'm not asking for your permission," he growled.
Eric struggled against Peter's grip, but Peter didn't let go. The tension between them escalated as Peter's hand tightened around Eric's throat, and you realized what he was about to do.
"Peter," you whispered, your voice barely audible. "Don't..."
But Peter didn't stop. With a swift motion, he pulled a knife from his belt and plunged it into Eric's chest. Eric gasped, his eyes widening in shock, before his body went limp in Peter's grasp.
You stood frozen, watching as Peter let Eric's body fall to the ground. He wiped the blood from his knife, his expression cold and unreadable.
"I told you," Peter said quietly, turning to face you. "I'll do whatever it takes to protect you."
And in that moment, you realized just how far Peter was willing to go—for you.
