The sound of gunfire and screaming surrounds me, echoing in the darkness of the old warehouse, but all I can focus on is Sam. He's caught in a brutal fight, a dozen guards closing in, and though I know he's strong—terrifyingly so—something deep within me, something fierce and desperate, tells me that I have to help him.
I dodge through the chaos, my breath ragged as I duck behind a stack of crates. I'm just within reach of him now, and the sight breaks my heart: Sam's face is twisted in rage and pain, his fists clenched, muscles tense, blood streaking down his arm. He fights like someone with nothing left to lose, but he doesn't see the guard sneaking up from behind him, aiming a weapon straight at his back.
Without thinking, I lunge forward, knocking Sam out of the way as the guard fires. Pain erupts in my side, white-hot and searing, and I collapse, gasping, my vision blurring.
"Y/N!" Sam's voice is raw, frantic, but I can barely hear him over the ringing in my ears. He kneels beside me, his hands shaking as he presses down on the wound. The agony is blinding, and I try to focus on him, on the look of horror in his eyes, but everything is fading, slipping away.
"No," he whispers, his voice breaking. "No, no, no—don't do this to me. Please."
His face twists with fury as he lifts his head, and what happens next is a blur of violence and chaos. He launches himself at the guards, tearing through them like they're paper. There's a terrifying, unstoppable energy in him, and for a moment, he's all rage, pure and unrestrained. Blood splatters across the walls, the ground, and even as I drift in and out of consciousness, I can feel the force of his fury, raw and unfiltered.
When the last of them falls, he's back at my side, his hands cradling my face as he looks at me with desperation, his fingers brushing over my skin like he's afraid I might shatter beneath his touch.
"Stay with me, Y/N," he begs, his voice choked. "Please. I can't... I can't lose you. I need you. I need you."
And it's then, in that moment, as I feel his hands on me, as I see the tears in his eyes, that something shifts inside me. A warmth spreads from where he's holding me, flowing through my veins, a gentle heat that feels like nothing I've ever known. It's like an invisible force pulling me back, a soft glow that pushes away the darkness and wraps me in light.
Slowly, the pain fades, and I feel my body healing, knitting itself back together as I focus on him, on the love I feel for him and—though I barely dare to hope it—the love I can feel radiating from him in return. The warmth strengthens, a feeling so intense it takes my breath away.
Sam's eyes widen as he sees the color return to my face, and his hands hover above me, shaking. "You're... you're okay?"
I take a shaky breath, feeling life flood back into my body as I sit up slowly, the wound on my side all but gone. "Sam..." My voice is soft, but there's a strength in it that I didn't know I had before. "I healed, because of you."
He stares at me, stunned. "What... what do you mean?"
"Love," I whisper, barely daring to meet his gaze. "I think my healing powers... they're fueled by love. By you. You saved me."
There's a beat of silence, and then his hand cups my face, his thumb brushing tenderly over my cheek. "You're saying... because I love you?" His voice is raw, almost reverent, and his eyes search mine, waiting.
I nod, swallowing against the lump in my throat. "You do. I could feel it, Sam."
He lets out a shaky breath, his forehead coming to rest against mine as he closes his eyes. "I do, Y/N. I do love you. I've tried to keep it in, to keep you safe, but I can't... I can't keep it to myself anymore." He pauses, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I'd burn this whole world down for you, if that's what it took."
A warmth spreads through my chest as I press my hand over his heart, feeling its steady, reassuring beat. "I love you too, Sam," I whisper, the words finally coming out, sweet and aching and real. "And I would die for you if it meant keeping you safe. There's nothing I wouldn't do."
He pulls me into his arms, his hold tight and protective as if he's afraid I'll vanish. For a moment, we sit in silence, just holding each other, letting the weight of everything settle. His fingers brush through my hair, his breath warm against my cheek as he holds me close, grounding me in the reality of this moment.
"You're everything," he murmurs softly, his lips brushing against my temple. "I don't know how I got so lucky, but I swear, I'm never letting go."
And for the first time, I feel truly safe, held in the arms of someone who loves me, with a love that's fierce and unbreakable. I pull back just enough to look into his eyes, seeing the same love reflected there, and I know that no matter what comes, we'll face it together.
Sam presses his forehead to mine, his voice barely above a whisper. "I thought I'd lost you," he says, his voice thick with emotion. "But you came back to me."
"I'll always come back to you," I promise, my heart swelling as I take his hand in mine. "No matter what."
And in that moment, with the echoes of battle fading around us, I know that I have found something worth fighting for—someone worth living for, worth risking everything for. And as long as I have Sam by my side, there's nothing I can't face.
