*Marlhy's POV*

Two weeks had passed since Phil came home with bloodied knuckles and the stone I had sent for. We suggested he wait a while to get the next ingredient as to let his hands heal, which he reluctantly agreed to.

In those weeks I'd been exercising my magic every day to make it stronger. Phil realized I was approaching the threshold of being able to heal Dan, which I was. He still wanted to follow through with the whole fairy thing, though, probably to relieve Dan of getting hurt any further than he'd already been. I noticed Dan had been hurt quite a few times recently, so I saw where he was coming from.

Another thing I had noticed was that Chris hadn't been around much lately. He would be around until about eleven in the morning, the whole time seeming very on edge. Then, he'd just disappear somewhere and wouldn't tell us where he was going. Chris would be out pretty much all day, and return just as the sun was setting. It was worrying, and we were all quite troubled by it.

I was going to get to the bottom of this somehow, whether he liked it or not.

*Dan's POV*

Marlhy's powers had been strengthening lately. She was slowly healing me every few days. My arm was now somewhat better - although still too broken to put any weight on or move around much - and I could sit and stand without much assistance. I felt a lot better than I had, even though I still couldn't really leave the treehouse much or do anything physical. My time was mostly spent walking laps around the treehouse in order to prevent needing physical therapy later on, and bonding with Phil.

Chris had been acting strange lately, too. He'd leave in the morning and come back at night, and he wouldn't tell us where he went or what he did. Marlhy was most affected by this, and it hurt Phil and I to have to watch her be in pain like that.

One day, Phil and I were cuddling in the living room when I got an idea. "Philly," I asked, "do you think we could pry it out of Chris? Like, where he's been?"

"Depends, love," Phil said, "do you have an idea of how we would do that?"

As I was about to respond with an "I don't know", Chris entered the room out of breath, like he had been running. Phil sat up from under me, supporting me to sit up as well. "Mate, what's going on?" Phil asked, just before Marlhy came running in from elsewhere.

She ran up to him and enveloped him in a tight embrace, which he accepted. Phil and I exchanged eye contact, smiling at the adorableness of it all. Their height difference was the most enviable, as Marlhy was a short girl of five foot three or so while Chris was six foot two. Just friends, I thought, my ass.

"Chris! You're back! Where have you been? What's going on?" Marlhy rambled. Chris broke the hug and moved to face all of us.

"Might as well come clean," he started, "shouldn't I? I've been going to visit my sister back home. Her and mum have not been getting along at all. Constantly arguing. I have to be there a lot to break up fights and keep my sister entertained.

"Today when I arrived, they were having a huge fallout. My sister was throwing things and my mum looked just about ready to kill her. I don't even know what they were fighting about! I had to hold mum back while I shouted at my sister to stop. When she did, I took her and we ran out to the woods, but mum followed. We had to run around aimlessly for about five minutes before mum gave up. I brought her here, I hope you don't mind, but it's the only thing I could think to do." He looked close to tears now.

I spoke up. "Let's go meet her. Marlhy would have to fix the protection spell to let her in, but we'd better make sure we can trust her before we do anything. No offense, mate, but it's necessary."

Chris nodded. Phil helped me over to the ladder and Marlhy cast a quick charm to help me down safely. The other three followed, and Chris began to lead us to her. She was in the grotto, I figured from where he was going.

If one thing was for sure, I was concerned. Concerned about Chris's wellbeing, concerned I might get hurt further out here, concerned his sister might be terrible, just...

...concerned.
