*Phil's POV*

After a while of confusion, I found Marlhy sat on a stone in the grotto. She appeared to be crying, which instantly made me feel like crying. I let other people's emotions affect me, and although it helped me be more empathetic and supportive of others, it was really annoying.

"Marlhy?" I called out. She shook her head slightly.

"Fuck off, Ava."

"No, dear, it's me, Phil."

"Oh." Her voice was trembling and scratchy, proving she'd been crying.

I walked over to her and sat beside her on the rock, drawing her into my chest. "I'm sorry you had to find out like that," I said. She nodded. "She's not bad, I promise."

"I wish I could believe you, Phil, but it's just not adding up for me. I need to think for a bit."

I sighed, but agreed. I didn't want her feeling uncomfortable, and I sure as hell didn't want heightened conflict. Turning to her, I asked "What's the next thing I need to find?"

She sniffed and gave it some thought. "Virgin soil. Essentially dirt which has no plant roots or worms or anything in it. Makes for a nice base. I'd like if you got quite a bit of it, please."

"I will. Be back in a bit. Feel better, please."

It took a few hours, but I finally found a large source of virgin soil. Scooping it up, I was able to collect a flower pot's worth of the stuff without trouble. It was probably about seven in the evening or so once I found it, and it took about a half hour to walk back to the treehouse. Marlhy wasn't back yet when I arrived, but since the sun hadn't set yet, I wasn't all too concerned.

After dropping the soil off in the storage room, I retreated past a grumpy Ava and a sorry Chris to Dan's bedroom. We chatted for a good while before drifting off to sleep together.

I woke up after an hour or two and noticed the sun had set. The events of earlier came flooding back to me and I sprung out of bed, walking to the living room to check for Marlhy.

When she wasn't there, I grabbed a blanket and walked towards the grotto.

In the grotto, I discovered a sleeping Marlhy in the grass. She looked tense and uncomfortable on the ground, and she was shivering ever so slightly.

Feeling sorry for her, I picked her up and swaddled her in the blanket, before carrying her back home.
