*Phil's POV*
It was only two or three in the afternoon a few days later, and so I was determined to fetch the next reagent before night fell. Marlhy informed me that the next ingredient was a small pinecone.
"Any small pinecone will do," she told me, "any you can find. It'd probably be best to grab more than one, just in case. It's to symbolize dedication to the trees. Fairies live in the trees, and we need to reinforce that in new recruits. The pinecone helps a lot."
The only pine tree I knew of around here was outside of Dan's mum's place. As much as I didn't want to return to that house of horrors, I had to. For Dan.
I had to prepare if I was going to get those pinecones without incident. Grabbing Dan's bag and reassuring him, I began to pack. The things I packed included a small pocketknife, a waterbottle (full, of course), and a bundle of sticks. I was crafty with defense.
Waving goodbye to Dan, I exited the treehouse and started toward my destination.
It took quite a while to get there, maybe twenty or thirty minutes total. When I got close, I drew my pocketknife from my bag and held it by my side. Creeping slowly towards the pine tree, which was now in my line of vision, I was silent and prepared.
Dan's mum's car was gone, but I didn't know just how long I had until she got back. Acting swiftly, I galloped over to the pine tree and looked underneath for pinecones. Finding small ones wasn't too difficult, and I must have picked up five or six small ones before I realized what kind of trouble I was in.
Hearing growling behind me, I turned to see a ferocious looking dog about three metres away from me.
Holy shit, his mum got a dog to keep Dan away from home, I realized.
It was blocking me from going back where I came, and I knew running would only ensue in it following me. Using my common sense, I stood extremely still for a few moments. The dog never took its eyes off me and slowly began to tread towards me, snarling all the way.
What do I do what do I do what do I d-
Suddenly, an idea came to me. Throwing the pinecone in my hand gave me just enough time to grab my pocketknife and bundle of twigs from my bag while the dog was distracted. When it turned back to me, I took a battle stance (video games have taught me well) and adrenaline kicked in. I clicked open my knife, although I didn't intend to hurt the dog unless it hurt me first. I was against animal violence 100%, but if this dog was going to kill me while I was trying to save my boyfriend, I wouldn't hesitate to defend myself.
Pulling a stick from the bundle, I chucked it in the opposite direction that I meant to go. The dog looked, but didn't move. I cursed under my breath and threw another stick. This intrigued it, but still it stayed put. With the third stick, though, it couldn't resist and took after it. I smiled and took off towards the woods.
Once the dog realized what I was doing, though, it let out a loud bark and started running towards me. I screamed and ran faster. However, this resulted in me tripping over my own feet and being at the disposal of the large dog. It towered over my sitting height.
I drew my knife but was too scared to do anything. The dog growled and seemed to be about to go into the kill, but looked up above my head and began to back up. I took the chance and looked back to see none other than Ava, with wings, glaring at the animal.
When I turned back to it, it was no longer a dog, but instead a furious PJ sitting on the grass.
