*Marlhy's POV*

It had been three days since Phil's death. We wanted to give Dan a little time to grieve before we went through with the potion. That didn't stop us from operating on Phil, though.

I'll spare the gory details, but Ava and I ended up slicing a few bits off of Phil's heart with it still attached to the rest of him (as not to make a mess) and then sewed him back up nice and pretty. We also stitched up his throat wounds so he wouldn't upset Dan too much at the funeral. Finally, I placed a charm on him so that he wouldn't bloat any over time.

There's a charm for everything.

Ava went back to being completely faerie again, but she still had her normal mindset. We decided to wait until Phil was taken care of and Dan was a fairy before we continued her treatment.

We were all pretty torn up about Phil's death, but none more so than Dan. The rest of us cuddled and cried together for those three days, and we ate so much comfort food we could've burst. Dan, though, chose to lock himself in his bedroom - which it depressed us to know he didn't share anymore - and be silent. He rarely cried, and instead was probably just listening to music and cuddling Phil's jumper. The only time he came out was for food - never walks or anything else. He didn't speak to us at all.

Today, though, he had to come out. We were going to mix the potion and give it to him, and we couldn't do it with him locked in there.

Ava had agreed to help me mix the potion. Chris stood back and watched.

"Alright, guys, let's get this started," I sighed, popping my knuckles in preparation.

Ava had apparently thought to pack quite a sum of money before she ran away, so we had Chris go to the nearest dollar store and grab a bunch of Tupperware containers for our supplies, plus a label maker so we'd know what was what. Another charm ensured that none of it would rot, and so we began.

"What's first?" Ava asked me.

"Sugar water," I stated, "I need the sugar water. Measure out half the jar, I'd say."

Chris assisted in the measuring, and Ava poured it into the mixing bowl I'd set out. "Now," I said, picking up my spoon and stirring the water around, "gently sift a bit of the soil in. Not a lot, just a bit. I'll stir while you do."

They obliged, and a slight glow emerged from the bowl, adding a bit of an eerie atmosphere to the dim room.

"Now, cut up three carnation petals into thin strips and sprinkle them in." Doing this caused the glow to grow steadily brighter with each strip.

I then fetched the stone with the runes carved into it. I set it down in front of the bowl and placed both my hands on it, closing my eyes and murmuring the words to the spell under my breath. It appeared I concentrated just enough, as when I opened my eyes, a bright blue powder replaced the stone. Collecting some of the powder, I sprinkled it in and put the rest of it away in its container. The potion's glow grew a bit bluer, but brighter still. It wasn't blindingly bright yet, but it could've replaced a candle as light just fine.

"Take apart that pinecone," I ordered, pointing at a decently sized one. Chris stripped away all the layers and put them in the mixture. I stirred, which brightened the glow.

Ava then took a petal from the jasmine and held it over the pot, whispering the needed spell. Three drops of jasmine cologne fell from the petal before it shriveled up and disintegrated. Each drop caused a billow of fog to come from the pot. I stirred some more, and the room became very aromatic with the scent of the outdoors. That's how I knew it was working.

Finally, I took out a small piece of Phil's heart and dropped it into the mixture. With this, the potion's light grew ever brighter and lit up the whole room. Quickly, I switched the pot over to a flame and let it simmer for a few minutes.

Finally, all the colours swirled together to create a pure white liquid. Chris took the pot off the heat and had Ava hold a vial underneath while he poured it in. When the entire bowl full of potion had been cleaned out, I put a cork in the vial and headed to Dan's room.

When we arrived, Dan let us in without us arguing. His room was surprisingly clean - not even dirty tissues littered the floor. "Phil would have wanted it to be clean," Dan said. His voice hadn't been used in days and so it was weak and pathetic.

"Lie down on your bed, Dan," I instructed, "I'm going to put you out first. The transition hurts, and it's for the best."

Dan looked ecstatic. He probably hadn't been able to sleep much at all, and so the thought of forced sleep sounded of paradise to him.

Chris and Ava stood at the end of his bed, watching intently.

"Count to twenty in your head, Dan," I said, starting the charm in my mind, "you won't make it to one."

It's almost over guys wow
