*Phil's POV*

It didn't take me long to get to the grotto. Once I did, I made a beeline for the water. I gently laid the jar down on the grass and hopped across the rocks. Taking two fingers, I swirled them around in the pond before sticking them in my mouth, tasting the water. Sure enough, it was sugar water.

I thought I remembered that from when I was drowning.

Quickly, I grabbed the jar again and filled it to the brim with the water. It was crystal clear except for little grains of sugar floating around in it. The sunlight traveled through the glass of the jar and it looked absolutely beautiful. Smiling, I began to twist the lid back on when I heard a voice from behind me.

"Phil, we need to talk."

Ava.

*Ava's POV*

I knew the recipe for the fairy potion. Phil wasn't going to like it one bit.

Marlhy notified me as soon as Phil left earlier. She told me how he was nearly finished with the potion, which alarmed me instantly. She had chosen not to tell him all the ingredients at once - just one at a time. Probably to keep the last one a secret. I didn't know how that helped at all. In fact, I thought that choice would probably make it worse. But, she had chosen that, and so I had to help her break the news.

"Ava? Marlhy? Oh, hey, I was just collecting the water. What do you need?" Phil was happily screwing the lid onto the jar. Completely unaware of what we were going to say next.

"Have a seat, Phil. You'll want to be sitting," I said.

He looked confused, but obeyed. When we approached him, he held out the jar to Marlhy, who whispered "Forager rame" while tossing it in the air, causing it to disappear in a cloud of smoke. That charm sent it straight to the storage room.

We sat on the rock across from him and mentally built up the courage to tell him. Marlhy seemed to want to go straight in for the kill, but I wasn't having it.

"Phil," I started, "you've been so dedicated to this whole thing, and we really appreciate it. Dan does, most of all. But we're about to test your dedication. This isn't a choice we made - it's fact. I wish it didn't have to be this way."

He looked alarmed, so Marlhy went ahead and said it.

"The final ingredient is a sliver of human heart."

My heart dropped even though I knew just what she was going to say. Phil's face fell and his jaw dropped. "Wh-What?" was all he could muster.

"Phil, I can't help you with this. None of us can. It's proven that in order for a new fairy to be made, a human has to die. You have to kill someone, Phil. It's an ironic twist of fate, it really is."

Tears started forming in Phil's eyes. I could tell he was thinking about who he was going to kill. He didn't want to off anyone, he was a kind soul and didn't have the heart for it.

After a moment, a single tear rolled down his cheek and he spoke in a cracked and upset voice. "Can I call Dan?"
