Chapter 23

Alice woke up on the ground, there was pieces of paper scattered around her, the room almost exactly like she was in before. As she woke up she felt someone's fingernails on her face, she didn't know who it was, not yet anyway. Looking around as she stood up, finally noticing the woman, Rio, standing in front of her.

"It's time to go. Pestilence isn't going to be happy about this."

Rio said mumbling the last part under her breath, she knew that both pestilence and Cass would not react well when they found out what she did.

"Where?"

Alice asked confused, she had no clue what the woman was talking about, and she was kind of scared. Instead of verbally answering she pointed at a doorway that lead to darkness, Alice looking down at where she had just got up from to see herself lifeless on the floor.

"That's it."

Alice said as she looked back at the woman realising who she actually was, she was death.

"That's all the time I get?"

Alice asked which caused the woman to laugh, all she could think about was how alone Cass must have been feeling.

"If I had a nickel."

Death said with a chuckle, causing Alice to panic, she very much didn't want to die, she didn't want to leave cass.

"It can't be the end, it has to be the beginning. I finally broke the curse, I found Cass again. She needs me."

Alice told the woman, who let out a little sigh, she knew that Cass would do anything to bring her back, so she had to get pestilence back. Rio knew that as soon as she found out how Billy had inhabited another body she would do whatever it took to do the same for Alice, and she couldn't let it happen.

"You're a protection witch."

Rio said, pushing that thought onto the back burner, she had to deal with Alice now then she could deal with Cassandra.

"Yeah."

Alice answered like it was a question, starting to realise why Cass hated the woman so much.

"You died protecting someone, or someone's."

Rio said hoping that would get Alice to come with her, tears welled in Alice's eyes as she realised what had happened. Alice looking back at her body as death made her way to the door.

"You ready?"

Rio asked knowing full well the answer to that question was no, she had no idea the fury she was going to unleash in Cass by doing this.

"Okay, okay think Rio. You can't have cass kill this boy or we'll never find him again. If she kills Jen then she'll kill them all and we're back at square one."

Rio said to herself as she paced back and forth as the scene played out before her, suddenly getting the idea.

"You can't hurt them, promise me Cassie."

Rio told Cass in her best Alice voice, it seemed to have Cassandra fooled.

"Alice."

Cass breathed out, Rio watching as the woman fell to her knees, in that moment she didn't care how cruel she was being to Cassandra but she was going to regret it.

"Alice, where are you?"

Cass asked tears rolling down her, Rio getting a bit out of character for Alice as she answered hoping that Cass wouldn't notice.
