Shoot

When his boss had suggested weapons training in the shooting range, Ianto knew it was a very bad idea which would likely go to hell in a hand-basket almost immediately and would likely have the younger man out of a job quicker than he'd gotten into it.

The younger man had already failed at it twice when working for Yvonne at Torchwood One; which had resulted in a strangely annoyed yet sympathetic look from the woman as she reassigned the younger man to a strictly desk job only position within Torchwood One. It was a decision which would come back to bite them both on the arse the day of the Cyberman attack on Canary Wharf.

After that day, Ianto had not only retreated into himself but also resigned himself to being incapable of any kind of combat or weapons training. That was until one Captain Jack Harkness; his new boss at Torchwood Three had declared that weapons training was not only necessary but mandatory if Ianto ever wanted to go out into the field one day.

“Sir, I can assure you handing me a gun is likely to be more dangerous to the team than any alien.” The younger man protests desperately, stepping away from the table of weapons.

“Ianto, I've already told you ...”

“It's mandatory. I know that, Sir. But I failed twice while at Torchwood One and I had Yvonne training me personally.”

“Well, unlike Yvonne, Ianto, I have enough time to be more hands on with weapons training.” Jack replies, smirking at the younger man.

Before Ianto can utter another protest, Jack grabs the younger man by the arm and pulls him towards the table.

“Pick up a gun, Ianto.” Jack growls in the younger man's ear, causing Ianto to gasp in surprise.

Realising that his boss is done with hearing excuses, Ianto warily picks up the smallest gun on the table and just stares at it intently for a moment.

“Bold choice for a man who's wary of guns.” Jack replies with a grin, teasing the younger man.

“How so, sir? It's the smallest gun on the table.” Ianto asks in confusion.

“It also happens to be a laser blaster. The most deadly weapon on the planet Phryxus that killed ninety per cent of the planet's population.”

Ianto stares wide-eyed at his boss before dropping the gun back on the table in horror and ducking as it hits the table with a loud thud.

Jack's laugh echoing around the room causes Ianto's head to snap back up and look at his boss in confusion, wondering if the man is actually insane.

“Sir?”

“I'm messing with you, Ianto. Just a regular Earth gun with regular Earth bullets.” Jack laughs, holding his hand out for the younger man.

Ianto takes Jack's hand as the older man pulls him to his feet, before sliding a pair of headphones onto the younger man's head. After putting on his own set of headphones, Jack picks up the gun and fires at one of the targets.

“See? Nothing to worry about.” Jack says with a grin.

Ianto raises his hand to smack Jack in the arm before quickly dropping it back down and scowling at him instead.

“Trust me. You can do this.” Jack says softly, holding the gun out to the younger man.

The younger man carefully takes the gun from his boss' hand, his eyes searching the older man's face for any kind of deception and finding only sincerity.

Jack steps back and motions for Ianto to get in position to start shooting.

The first shot flies high above the targets and embeds itself in the ceiling thanks to Ianto's shaking hand as the younger man sighs in defeat.
