The afternoon sun cast a warm glow over the backyard as the family soaked in a rare, leisurely weekend together. Lucy sat comfortably in a deck chair, a soft blanket draped over her and her three year old daughter, Eliana, who had dozed off on her chest. She watched her boys with a peaceful smile, amused by their enthusiasm as they took on an impromptu baseball game. Tim had split the five boys into two teams, their laughter and shouts filling the yard with life.

Tayden, the nine-year-old, stood by the makeshift home plate, gripping his bat with intense focus. He gave his dad a confident nod, indicating he was ready for whatever pitch Tim threw his way. On the sidelines, his brothers were bouncing on their toes, ready to dash for bases marked by backyard items like hats and sticks.

Tim- (grinning) Alright, Tayden, here it comes!

Tim tossed the ball toward Tayden, who swung with all his might. Crack! The ball soared through the air—heading straight toward Tim, who barely had time to process before it made a direct hit... to his crotch.

Tim- (choked) Oh... oof...

In an instant, he was down on his knees, one hand instinctively covering the impact area, the other on the ground, as he let out a muffled groan. Tayden froze, his eyes wide in shock, while the rest of the boys paused, trying to stifle their laughs but not quite succeeding.

Lucy's eyes widened from across the yard, and she carefully placed the sleeping Eliana onto a soft blanket before heading over to her husband, who was still catching his breath.

Lucy- (kneeling beside him, a bit amused) You alright there, slugger?

Tim managed a weak nod, a wry smile creeping onto his face despite the pain.

Tim- (strained) Guess he's got a better swing than I thought...

Tayden looked sheepish as he shuffled over, bat still in hand.

Tayden- (quietly) Sorry, Dad. I didn't mean to!

Tim- No worries, kiddo. That was a solid hit—just... maybe aim a bit higher next time, yeah?

Lucy gave Tayden an encouraging smile, then turned her attention back to Tim, her brows furrowing with concern.

Lucy—(softly) Seriously, are you okay? Do you need a minute?

Tim—(breathing through the discomfort) I'll need a minute or two... Just give me a sec.

Lucy watched him for a moment, her heart both aching for him and amused by the situation. She couldn't help but chuckle, shaking her head at how such an innocent game could lead to such chaos.

After a brief pause, Tim began to shift, adjusting his position as he tried to stand up. It took a moment, but he finally got to his feet, albeit gingerly.

Tim—(forcing a smile) Alright, let's get back to it! Who's up next?

The boys erupted into cheers, eager to resume their game. Tayden grinned, a bit more cautious this time, as he returned to his position at the plate.

Lucy—(playfully) You might want to invest in a cup!

Tim chuckled, shaking his head at her teasing as he took his place back on the pitcher's mound.

Tim—(smirking) Yeah, figured that one!

As the game resumed, laughter echoed through the yard once again, the afternoon sunshine warm on their backs, bringing back the joyful chaos that made family time so special.
