It was a quiet Sunday morning, and the family was spread out around the house, each doing their own thing. Lucy was in the kitchen making breakfast, Tim was flipping through the newspaper, and the kids were playing in various rooms. Eliana was outside for a moment, but her favorite pop song was still playing on the stereo in the living room, filling the house with its irresistibly catchy beat.
Eliana's brothers were usually the first to mock her taste in music, especially William, who loved to make faces or cover his ears every time she played this particular song. But today, with no one around, he wandered into the living room, casually humming along. The beat pulled him in further, and before he knew it, William was dancing—full-on singing into an imaginary microphone, busting out moves he would never, ever do in front of anyone.
He jumped onto the couch, his energy skyrocketing as he hit the chorus, totally immersed in his performance. Just then, Tim, hearing the commotion, peeked into the living room. Amused by what he saw, he couldn't resist pulling out his phone to capture the moment.
Tim was grinning, trying not to laugh as he recorded his son performing with complete abandon. William had no idea he was being watched—until he spun around and spotted both Tim and Lucy standing there, trying to hold back their laughter. His eyes went wide, and he froze in shock, his cheeks blazing red.
William- (panicking) D-Dad! Were you... filming?!
Tim- (chuckling) What? Just a little dance for the family album.
William shot a mortified look at his dad's phone and instantly scrambled off the couch, crossing his arms in a feeble attempt to regain his dignity. But just then, the front door opened, and Eliana came back inside, instantly noticing her favorite song still playing and William standing right by the stereo. She raised an eyebrow, putting two and two together.
Eliana- (smirking) Were you... dancing to my song?
Eliana- (laughing) Caught him, didn't you?
Tim- (smiling) Oh, we did. And I got the whole thing on video!
William bolted up the stairs, heart racing as he tried to escape the embarrassment of his impromptu dance performance. His parents had caught him singing and dancing to that song—the one he and his brothers always teased Eliana about. Now, he could only hope they wouldn't bring it up ever again.
In the living room, Tim and Lucy exchanged smiles, neither of them intending to show the video to anyone. They would never do that, to any of their children.
Lucy- (teasingly calling up to William) Don't worry, buddy! We'll only show it at your wedding!
But just then, Eliana's eyes lit up with realization. She'd picked up enough from her parents' laughter and the lingering music to piece things together.
With a mischievous grin, Eliana skipped upstairs and knocked on William's door.Eliana- (sing-song) William? Can I come in?
William- (from behind the door) No!
Eliana- (smirking) Hmm... so, you were dancing to my favorite song? Isn't that funny? You always say it's too "cringey," right?
The door opened a crack, and William's mortified face appeared, cheeks blazing red.
William- (hushed) Eliana, please... Don't tell anyone, okay?
Eliana grinned, savoring the rare leverage over her brother.
Eliana- (pretending to think) Well... I could keep it quiet. But I might need a few favors. You know, to make sure I never accidentally bring it up.
William sighed, shoulders slumping in reluctant defeat.
William- Fine. What do you want?
Eliana's grin grew wider as she saw her brother's reluctance turn into reluctant agreement. She was only eight, but she knew how to make the most of her rare leverage over her eleven-year-old brother. She tapped her chin thoughtfully, savoring the moment.
Eliana- Well... let's see. For starters, you have to play my favorite game with me after dinner. And no complaining.
William- Fine. Just don't pick the unicorn game.
Eliana- Especially the unicorn game.
William shot her a defeated look, but she was just getting started.
Eliana- (innocently) And I might also need you to help me organize my new craft kit this weekend. It's got a lot of glitter and beads... and stuff.
William sighed, knowing full well that this meant hours of glitter everywhere.
William- Alright... anything else?
Eliana- No. That's it...for now.
