Saphira's POV:
I arrived back home, just when the sun's last ray of light disappeared behind the hills. I opened the front door of our shared apartment and immediately walked into the living room. The apartment I shared with the mayor and his family is small, but I can't complain really, it was homey enough. The moment someone steps into the apartment, they first walk into the living room, and just next to it is the small kitchen, the only thing separating the two rooms is the dinner table. On the left side of the square home is the two doors that lead to the master bedroom and the bathroom, on the left is the other bedroom I share with the mayor's kids. There was a small garden at the back of the apartment where the backdoor in the kitchen leads to.
We would have had a small balcony too, but we're on the floor level where the mayor's wife wanted the garden for her vegetables. The decorations were simple and there was not much of it, we don't need a lot and the mayor's wife was alright with that. I closed the door behind me and walked towards the double seater couch, I dropped my shoulder bag on it before taking a seat myself. I heaved a tired sigh and kicked up my feet on the small wooden coffee table. The door behind me opened and I heard a fimiliar voice mumbling in annoyance, their steps indecated that they were heading for the bathroom. I stayed quite while listening to the person walking and still mumbling to themself. They weren't in there for long, when they left the bathroom; they went straight to the kitchen with hurried steps, still mumbling to themself.
That's when I noticed the smell; something was cooking on the stove. The figure in front of the stove was stirring something in a pot; they reached for a knife next to them and picked up a cutting board before turning around to the small kitchen island. ''Aaah!" The mayor's wife shouted in surprise when she finally noticed me on the couch. She quickly put the knife and cutting board on the counter before putting a hand to her chest. ''Goodness child, you almost gave me a heart attack!'' She shouted, I just gave her a tired smile. ''Sorry.'' I said. ''No, you're not!'' She shouted angrily again, pointing a accussing finger at me. ''You always do this! You love scaring people.'' She heaved out a tired sigh.
"Whatever, I thought I'm already use to it. Guess not.'' She finally relaxed and looked at my tired self. ''It's your day off from work and you spend it by training again.'' It wasn't a question so I stayed quite, ''Honestly, you train everyday even when you're working, you need to take a real break.'' She lightly scolded me and got back to cooking. I rolled my eyes when she wasn't looking. I got up and headed for my shared bedroom. The room was big enough to fit two beds, the second bed being a bunk bed. In the far corner, right next to our single window is my, also shared, drawer. I didn't have a lot of clothes; I have three or five sets of clothing plus my work's clothes. I grabbed a shirt and some comfy shorts before heading for the bathroom.
The bathroom is the smallest room in the apartment. There is a tub, a toilet and a small table with a washing bin on top. The water was dirty. I pulled a disgusted face before taking the bin and cleaning it out in the tub, and putting in clean water after. In a corner was a pile of dirty clothes. Now I know what the mayor's wife was annoyed about, she's going to have a long day tomorrow. I filled the tub and took a quick cold bath. I exited the bathroom with my towel wrapped around my wet hair.
''Ah, you're home.'' Said a gruff voice. I looked up to see, at the dinner table, was the mayor and his two sons. ''Yeah.'' I said simply and joined them at the table just when the mayor's wife brought the food to the table. She took her seat, next to her husband. ''Right, let's hold hands and say our prayers.'' She said before taking her husband's hand and her son in front of her. I took the other free hands and bowed my head with the rest of them. We gave our silent prayers and finally started eating. The food was simple yet good, as always.
''Complements to the chef.'' I said, looking at the mayor's wife. ''Thank you Saphira, glad you like it. Unlike some ungrateful brats.'' She pointedly looked to her sons who were poking at their food. ''Their kids Mary, they'll grow out of it.'' The mayor said dismissively. The mayor's wife just huffed before continuing to eat. I glanced at the two spoiled brats and thought of a way to help the mayor's wife. ''Do you boys want to hear another story before bed?" I asked them, I took a quick glance at the mayor's wife to see her approval before continuing. The boys lighted up like fireworks when I asked and quickly nodded their heads in yes. ''Okay, but only under one condition.'' I held up one finger for indication. They quickly lost their smiles but nodded their heads again. They knew what I was going to ask them already, it happens almost every night.
