The sunlight streamed through the curtains, bathing the room in a soft, golden light. Meredith and Derek were cocooned in blankets, their bodies entwined as they peacefully slept. Suddenly, a burst of energy filled the air as Crystal, with her wild curls bouncing, jumped onto the bed.
"Wake up, sleepyheads!" she squealed, giggling as she bounced on the mattress.
Meredith groaned, pulling the blanket over her head, while Derek chuckled, opening one eye to look at the enthusiastic child. "What time is it?" he mumbled, still half-asleep.
"Time for breakfast!" Crystal exclaimed, her voice dripping with excitement.
With a smile, Derek sat up, the blanket falling away to reveal a tangled mess of hair and a sleepy grin. "Alright, alright. We're up!"
Meredith stretched and sat up beside him, leaning into his shoulder as Crystal clambered off the bed. They exchanged a sleepy smile, relishing in the warmth of each other's presence. After a few moments of comfortable silence, they followed Crystal out of the room.
Ellis was in the kitchen, expertly flipping pancakes while Maddy and Lexie set the table. The smell of syrup and freshly brewed coffee filled the air, creating a cozy atmosphere. "Good morning, everyone!" Ellis called cheerfully, turning to face her girls. "Breakfast is almost ready. You'll need your energy for the day ahead!"
As they gathered around the table, laughter and chatter filled the room. Crystal enthusiastically shared stories of her adventures over the holidays, while Derek and Meredith exchanged knowing glances, enjoying the chaos of family life.
After breakfast, Ellis announced she needed to head to the hospital. "There are always a lot of fools during the holidays," she said with a wry smile. "But someone has to keep the doctors on their toes."
"Be safe, Mom!" Mer called out as Ellis grabbed her coat.
"Don't worry, I will. Just keep an eye on the little ones," Ellis replied, blowing a kiss before heading out.
With Ellis gone, Thatcher, who had been lounging in the living room, approached Derek, a serious expression on his face. "Can we talk for a minute?" he asked, gesturing to a quieter corner of the room.
"Sure," Derek replied, intrigued.
They moved away from the bustling kitchen, and Thatcher took a deep breath. "I just wanted to say... you need to take care of her, Derek. Meredith has been through a lot, and we both know her past. I want to make sure she's happy."
Derek nodded, the weight of Thatcher's words sinking in. "I know. I care about her more than anything. She means the world to me."
Thatcher studied him for a moment, his expression softening. "Just remember, it's not just about love. It's about understanding and patience. She needs someone who'll stand by her, no matter what."
"I promise I'll do my best," Derek assured him
As the afternoon wore on, the family spent time together, playing games and reminiscing about old memories. The laughter of children filled the house, a reminder of the joy in simple moments.
With time slipping away, it was soon time for everyone to say their goodbyes. Crystal clung to Meredith, her little arms wrapping around her waist.
Lexie and Maddy exchanged hugs with their father, promising to stay in touch. Thatcher shake Derek's hand, and said goodbye to everyone.
"Take care of her," Thatcher reiterated, his voice low but firm.
"I will," Derek promised, his heart swelling with determination.
