Chapter 19 - The Realization & the Talk

Karina

"Dad? What are you doing here?" I say surprised staring at my dad in his car. Fabiola my best friend looks at me and mouths "I'm sorry" and leaves. She's not suppose to be her either.

"Get in the car Karina Nicole. Now!" He looks mad. How did he even notice I was gone?

I walk slowly to the passenger seat door and open it. I slide in and shut the door. I'm looking at the passing cars not wanting to face him. The silence is unbearable so I turn on the radio but he turns it off almost instantly.

"What were you thinking!? Sneaking out?!" His eyes are full of anger and worry.

"I..."

"You weren't thinking. Something could have happened to you and we would've never even known." He looks at me and back at the road.

"Stop overreacting dad. Nothing was going to happen to me." We stop at a red light. Ugh perfect timing.

Dad turns to me his always smiling face serious. "Stop overreacting?"

"Yes, I'm not a child anymore. I can take care of myself! God dad really? You are so infuriating."

"I'll stop treating you like a child when you stop acting like one and when you stop being so selfish!"

I was about to say something when a blinding light appears. Then I hear metal bending and glass breaking. The car rolls over twice before coming to a stop. I try to stay awake, to figure out what the hell happened but my world just fades to black.

When I come to, my head hurts and I can hear people talking.

I touch my forehead and find it warm and wet. I look at my fingers which are now all bloody. Someone must have hit us. Dad groans and I try to move but a sharp pain in my side stops me. I groan in pain, my dress is covered in blood and there is a piece of glass sticking out of my side. I instantly get dizzy at the site of it.

"Estas bien? Ya llame la ambulancia estan de camino! (Are you okay? I called the ambulance, they are on their way)" An old man says looking at me from the front of the car. I start to panic and look around. There is blood everywhere.

"Dad? Dad!?" I try to call out but my throat is so dry I can barely speak.

"Mhhm..." I hear him groan again. "Kari..." He whispers through labored breathing.

"Hey. Oh my god dad! You're bleeding!" His right leg is pinned under the steering wheel and a lot of blood is coming out.

"Shh...shh. Calm down Kari." He swallows hard. "Everything is going to be fine." I stare at him and his leg which continues to bleed profusely.

"You're lying! Stop lying to me!" I yell at him angry and scared. I feel like a hopeless child.

His eyes close but only for a moment. He looks at me and smiles. "Rest Karina." Tears fall from his hazel eyes.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" I said between hysterical sobs. "I disappointed you."

He reaches for my hand and takes it in his. "You never disappointed me. I'm so proud of you and your sister. Don't ever forget that." His breathing becomes shallow and his eyes threaten to close.

"Shh...daddy please. Don't talk right now." He opens his eyes, looks at me and smiles.

"Karina I need you to listen to me very carefully." He cups my face in his hands. "You need to be strong. Okay? Tell your mother and Reina that I love them with all my heart and that these have been the happiest years. You have to take care of each other. Promise me."
