(Y/N) awoke with a yawn, wondering why her usually soft and warm bed was so cold. Sitting up, she then immediately laid back down and closed her eyes, hoping she would wake up in her room. It didn't work. Springing back up, she blinked once, twice, then smiled.

"What the shit?" She exclaimed.

Letting her eyes wander around her, she took in the crumbling buildings, vines already crawling up the sides and curling in windows to take back what were once mighty structures, the cracked roads that looked bare with no cars, and then she took in the silence. The silence that crawled at one's senses and made one want to scream.

"No, like seriously, what the shit?" She panicked, running both hands through her hair as she tried to understand the situation she found herself in.

I got up and drove to university...

I was talking to my friends, but after that...

Nothing.

I remember nothing after that.

Her eyes then widened when a memory of her death due to faulty lab equipment socked her all at once. Burying her face in her hands, a low moan escaping her lips when realizing what had happened, she knew she was screwed. Rocking back and forth, masking her shocked sobs to a quiet muffle so as not to attract anything out of the ordinary, she tried to calm herself down, knowing full well she wasn't anywhere near home.

An accident.

That's all it was.

But, then where is everyone else, and... why does everything look so... broken?

Picking herself up, (Y/N) dusted off the remnants of rubble and dirt that clung to her dirty uniform. Her white shirt and a plaid skirt was now stained, her stockings were ripped with jagged holes, and her shoes were scuffed and scratched—in hindsight, she was a mess. Wiping her nose, she stumbled away from the spot she had awoken in, desperate to find someone in the seemingly ghost town she had found herself in.

It wasn't long before she came across someone.

Well, their skeleton.

Letting out a shriek of surprise, having been investigating inside a rather worn house, she tried to calm her ragged breathing. Upon closer observation, the bones were worn and the plant-life that she had seen everywhere was also abundant.

So...

They've been dead for a while.

But... how?

Swallowing thickly, her throat having gone dry, (Y/N) pressed her fingertips to her lips—having to physically tell herself not to gag—before exiting the once vibrant home. Despair started to well inside of her gut before a sudden inkling of an idea ran through her.

Wait... if I died, how did I get here?

Shivering slightly from the sudden cold breeze, she wrapped her arms around her torso, walking down the street silently in hopes of finding someone who could explain to her how she got into this mess. Rounding the corner of a building that had all its windows smashed in, some glass littering the streets but most she suspected having fallen inside, along with the top half missing and leaving only the jagged bottom portion, she stopped dead in her tracks when something else large loomed over her.

It wasn't a building.

She had never seen such a hideous, terrifying creature before, and she never wanted to again.

But it was coming right for her.

The monstrous entity she had spotted turned towards her, a rather loud growl escaping from what she thought was its mouth, pure fear keeping her rooted to the spot as it speedily advanced ever closer. But how could she not feel anything but terror when the beast was several stories high with four legs in the essence of a spider, a whipping tail ending in a deadly spike, a gaping maw full of serrated teeth, and many piercing, sickly yellow eyes that looked to be able to stare right through her.

    What do I do!?

    What is that thing!?

    It's alive, isn't it, not man-made?

As all these different thoughts flashed through her, her mind couldn't keep up with her body as its fight or flight instincts kicked in at the approaching danger it was alerted to, her legs suddenly moving as she ran away from the creature. Its horrible screams and growls were close behind, crushing anything in its path to get to her.

Shit, shit, shit!

Sharp pain rippled all up and down her side as her ragged breathing turned almost primal while she ran, not stopping or slowing down, knowing that if she did, her life would surely end.

I need to get out of here, find help, and just get the hell away from this thing!

"Help!" She screamed, hoping that someone might hear her, someone whom she might've missed while walking around that was smart enough to hide. "Help! Please, anyone, I need help!"

Her hope began to waver when no one answered, already resorting to looking around desperately for a hiding place. Ducking inside one of the many abandoned buildings that hadn't corroded too badly, (Y/N) cursed when tripping over the abandoned shopping accessories and large cement pieces of the ceiling that had dropped, hiding in one of the stores under one of the many piles of discarded clothes, her hands clamping over her mouth in an effort to stifle her breathing.

She waited.

The rumble of the creature could be heard just outside, making her whimper silently as she tried to keep completely still.

What if it relies on scent!?

Oh, shit, what do I do!?

What if I can't escape this thing—

Her thoughts were interrupted by a multitude of loud thuds and shrieks that erupted from outside, the sounds soon growing more distant as whatever had now caught the monster's attention led it away from her hiding spot. Not moving for what seemed like hours rather than minutes, she soon deemed it safe to cautiously creep out of the pile of clothes. Letting out a sigh of relief, she thanked all and everything above her as she steadied herself on a nearby wall, sweat dripping down her temple from her earlier sprint. Sinking down to the floor, she shook her head over and over again, begging for this all to be some sick dream that she'd soon wake up to.

She'd be in hospital, her friends all around her, laughing at their shitty chances.

Her parents would be there too.

Her beloved pet that she adored more than anything would be on her lap.

The sound of footsteps soon broke her from her trance, the very notion that anyone was still alive in this world making her hope once more skyrocket. As her neck craned upward, revealing her red-rimmed eyes and messy hair, she wished she hadn't. The beings in front of her had bloody eyes and sharp fangs that glinted from underneath their top lip, the expressions curling in disgust upon sight of her.

They're not human.
