The last few days had been the most stressful in Phoenix's life. Every second he wasn't working was spent planning the preparations. This time it was going to be something really special, not just a surprise kiss at the door. For this new start Phoenix was going to make sure every moment he spent with Miles was going to build up the the perfect proposal, no word would go unused, no breath would be left unspent.
This time Phoenix would not be telling Maya, he could see how close she was with Franziska now and could just sense that the moment he spoke to her, a whole other group would fine out too. Not telling Maya meant not telling Pearl either which seemed to be proving difficult.
"Mr Nick why do you have so many posters and notes on your wall?"
"Sadly Pearl, I can't tell you that it's for something special."
Pearl squinted her eyes in disproval, it made Phoenix feel a dropping feeling in his stomach. Pearl bluntly answered back.
"I'll call Franziska."
She was going to stand her ground, Phoenix had to defend his position.
"Call her if you want, she doesn't scare me."
Phoenix was lying through his teeth but maybe a bluff like this was exactly what he needed in order to finally get Pearl to stop asking questions. Slowly, Pearl rolled up her sleeves making Phoenix widen his eyes. She didn't even have to say anything.
As Pearl slowly raised her fist Phoenix declared defeat.
"Ok! Fine I'll tell you! But if I hear that Maya got word of this you are in big trouble."
"No promises." Pearl smiled cheekily, Phoenix already knew what that meant.
"So Mr Nick. Why do you have these posters on your wall."
Phoenix looked back at the posters and notes on his wall, covered in picture of flowers, parks and different types of conversations and clothing.
"Pearl you know Mr Edgeworth? Well... This is a special surprise for him."
"Why?"
Phoenix sighed, there was no getting past this.
"Mr Edgeworth is a very special friend of mine and... Lets just say it's been a strange year. After his help with the case and saving Maya, I wanted to thank him. But I need to thank him in a very special way. Pearl, if we want to keep this surprise special you can't tell anyone ok? If he finds out then this will all be for nothing."
"But I can tell Maya right?"
Phoenix sighed again, maybe there wouldn't be too much harm in some backup.
"Ok fine you can tell her, but no one else. Understood?"
Pearl nodded and Phoenix went back to planning. A few minutes later, Pearl came back and had her bag in hand, dressed up and ready. She was quietly trying to tip toe her way out the door.
"Pearl where are you going?"
"Uhhh..."
Phoenix raised an eyebrow, he didn't think she would run off this soon.
"Ok fine! I'm going to see Maya."
"Pearl!"
"You said I could tell!"
"I didn't think you'd tell her this quickly!"
Pearl sparkled her eyes as much as she could and put on her cutest puppy face, Phoenix stood no chance.
"Fine! Go!"
Pearl left and it finally left Phoenix with some time to think. He had so many ideas but he knew he couldn't do them all at once.
Just thinking about Miles and his reaction made Phoenix all fuzzy inside, the butterflies would build up and he would begin to blush intensely. Now that he was sure that Miles felt the same way, it wasn't a matter of a confession but rather the perfect proposal. Phoenix knew what he wanted to do, all the classic romantic things. Bend down on one knee, flowers in hand, the sun would be shining and it would be quiet all around them.
Whilst thinking a problem came into Phoenix's mind, how could he ask Miles to join him without raising suspicion. He looked at his notes on which message he should write.
Maybe he could ask Miles to help him with some court records. No but then again Miles would dress too formal. How about a meeting at a cafe? No too casual. It had to be something right in the middle. Not to professional but not so casual that it felt quick and too flimsy.
All these choices were causing Phoenix to panic, he wanted this to be perfect but perfect was a hard word to define. In the end Phoenix came to a conclusion, he really needed help.
Phoenix was just about to call Maya for backup but he didn't even have to. In the hour or so that Phoenix had spent thinking, Pearl had already told Maya everything, and to his surprise she was on her way there.
Pearl slammed open the door and behind her stood Franziska and Maya. They both greeted him with a huge smile on their faces. Franziska was the first to speak.
"At last you have finally decided to court my foolish little brother. We could all see your admiration for him for months-"
Maya interrupted excitedly, bouncing up and down.
"What took you so long?"
When Phoenix thought about the answer he didn't even know, why did it take him so long. Of course he was upset for those first few months but even so, after they began to get close again. Even while he was upset Phoenix still felt overwhelming relief and joy just being around Miles. They completed each other.
So why did it take him so long?
With that question in mind, Franziska, Maya, Pearl and Phoenix sat down to plan how this proposal was going to take place. The entire time, Phoenix felt the butterflies in his stomach grow stronger, every time Miles's name was mentioned, Phoenix's face became redder and redder. He couldn't control his excitement.
