The ICU, once a place filled with despair, was now a space of fragile hope. The sound of KS's gentle, steady breaths filled the room as everyone gathered close, waiting for even the slightest sign. When her tiny finger twitched, the world seemed to stop. Haseena's gasp was the first sound to break the silence, and suddenly the room surged with movement and tears, joy mingling with guilt and relief.
As the doctor confirmed that KS had indeed woken up, they each took turns touching her tiny feet, whispering apologies, asking for forgiveness. Haseena, with her hand gently placed over KS's, could barely find her voice. Her own words from before echoed in her mind, carrying the weight of all she hadn't said. "Beta... mujhe maaf kar do. Humne tumhe kabhi samjha hi nahi... tum itnusi ho, you needed a family, and we did... what ur worst enemies wouldn't have done."
Amar, usually so confident, now trembled. As he bent to touch her feet, he choked back a sob. "Choti... humne galat kiya. Tum toh hamesha sabse zyada pyari thi, aur hum... humne tumhe akela chhod diya." He pressed his lips together, the reality of their mistakes settling like a stone in his chest.
Santosh, usually quiet, spoke in a voice filled with regret and love, "Baby... humne tumhe samajhne mein bohot der kar di. Lekin ab hum tumhare saath hain, hamesha ke liye." She squeezed KS's small hand, her heart swelling with both sorrow and devotion.
Anubhav, who had tried to be strong, couldn't hold back his emotions any longer. His face crumpled as tears streamed down, and before anyone could stop him, he ran to the mandir within the hospital, falling to his knees. He pressed his forehead to the ground, whispering fervent thanks to God. "Thank you, thank you... meri choti bach gayi," he murmured, barely coherent through his sobs. For once, he was willing to give up everything he had for her life, his heart brimming with gratitude and relief.
Back in the room, Shivani's voice cracked as she softly touched KS's feet. "Chotu... please hume maaf kar do. Tumhare bina toh humari duniya adhoori lagti hai."
Cheetah joined his hands, bending in remorse, his heart heavy with every word. "Baby... tu sabse pyaari thi... hum samajh hi nahi paye ke tu kitni zaroori thi." His voice wavered, and he looked down, his face wet with tears.
When the doctor finally removed the ventilator tube, KS's small chest rose and fell, her breathing free of the machine's aid. She opened her eyes, blinking slowly as her gaze wandered over each familiar face, her mind perhaps not fully understanding their sorrow but feeling their love.
Haseena gently lifted KS into her arms, holding her so close to her chest, as if trying to shield her from the world. The room went silent, and Haseena hugged her for what seemed like an eternity, her heart unable to let go of the little girl she had almost lost. KS, nestled against her, remained quiet, feeling the warmth and protection of Haseena's embrace. Her tiny hands curled around Haseena's collar, holding on tightly. For the next two hours, they stayed like that, a motherly love enveloping them both.
When KS's condition improved slightly but she remained weak and prone to feverish spells, the doctor informed them of her pneumonia. She was now vulnerable, and everyone around her vowed to make amends with their every breath.
In the Hospital Room
Haseena was the most constant presence by KS's side, gently wiping her brow with a warm cloth whenever she broke into a feverish sweat. "Beta, tum bas rest karo. Hum sab tumhare saath hain," she murmured, softly brushing stray hair from KS's face. KS, though barely conscious, would sometimes look up at Haseena with heavy, half-closed eyes and give the tiniest nod before falling back into sleep.
Shivani, took extra care to monitor KS's symptoms. She noticed even the smallest changes in her breathing patterns and would report them to the doctor immediately. "Doctor saab, aaj KS ki breathing thodi better lag rahi hai, na?" she asked one day, her eyes filled with hope. The doctor confirmed it, nodding and encouraging her to keep doing what they were doing.
When KS struggled to breathe, Cheetah would gently encourage her. "Baby... dheere-dheere saans lo, aise..." He took slow, deep breaths himself, showing her how to mimic him. "Hum sab tumhare saath hain, tension mat lo," he reassured her, his voice calm and steady. KS's small chest would heave, and she would try to match his breathing, finding a rhythm that seemed to ease her pain just a little.
Amar would bring small, comforting items to remind her of home—a soft blanket, a familiar toy, even a small bottle of her favorite fragrance. "Dekho, choti, hum tumhe yaha bhi ghar ka ehsaas denge," he said, holding up her favorite blanket and tucking it around her gently. "Tumhe humse durr nahi jaana, okay? Tum waapas aa rahi ho, apni energy ke saath."
When KS was awake, her family tried their best to keep her entertained, often breaking into light-hearted banter just to see her smile, even if only for a moment. Shivani, with a mischievous grin, would say, "Chotu, agar tum jaldi thik ho jaogi, toh tumhe Ammi ka special halwa milega, par thodi masti karna mana hai!" She wagged her finger playfully, making KS's lips curl up into a faint smile.
KS, her little voice raspy, would look at Haseena and say, "Halwa..." Her voice was soft but filled with determination, and everyone laughed at her brave spirit. Haseena would stroke her head and say, "Beta, tumhe halwa ke saath kuch aur bhi milega—jo tum chaho." KS's eyes sparkled slightly, hinting at her inner strength, even in her weakness.
Cheetah would tell her funny stories to lift her spirits, often exaggerating the details. "Tumhe pata hai, ek din main jungle mein ghum gaya tha!" KS listened with wide, curious eyes. By the end of the story, "Phir main tumhare jaise choti supergirl ko yaad kar raha tha, jo mujhe bacha leti. Tum toh hamare hero ho, baby," he said, his voice breaking slightly at the end.
After a week, KS's condition finally stabilized, and the doctor gave them instructions for her ongoing care at home. "KS is stable, but her pneumonia hasn't completely cleared. She'll need a lot of rest and close monitoring," the doctor advised, looking at each of them with a firm expression. "Make sure her room is warm and free from dust. She'll need to stay hydrated and take steam twice a day to help with breathing."
"Hum samajh gaye, Doctor saab," Haseena replied, her voice strong. "Hum KS ka khayal rakhenge, jaise woh humari duniya ho."
"Bas thoda aur time, aur ye choti bachi wapas apni energy pe aa jayegi," the doctor said kindly, a soft smile on his face.
