As KS slowly regained her strength, her little body still battling the occasional fever and cold, there was a moment that would stay with all of them forever. In afternoon, when the others had gathered in the living room, talking softly, KS had been sleeping soundly in the room, amongst everyone, in her crib. But then, as if sensing the stillness, KS awoke with a soft whimper, looking around the room, her eyes unfocused, as if she were unsure of where she was.
It was then that she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, "send me back? When??" (When will you send me back?)
Her question, simple and innocent, was a knife to their hearts.
The room went quiet. Haseena's face fell, and the others exchanged uneasy glances. They hadn't expected KS to voice her fears so openly, but there it was, laid bare in the most heartbreaking way.
"Beta, hum tumhe kahin nahi bhejenge," Haseena whispered, kneeling beside her. Her voice trembled as she cupped KS's tiny face in her hands. "Hum tumhe apne saath rakhna chahte hain. Tum humari beti ho." (We won't send you anywhere, baby. We want to keep you with us. You are our daughter.)
But KS's little face showed doubt, and the way her eyes darted around the room made it clear—she wasn't convinced.
"But... you left... that day... umm... like... like all" (But... you all left me that day. Like everyone else had.)
Her voice cracked, and she hugged herself tightly, her tiny body trembling. The rawness of her fear, the feeling of abandonment, hit them all like a wave.
Tears filled Haseena's eyes, and she reached out to pull KS into her arms, holding her as tight as she could, as if trying to reassure her that she was safe now. "No, no, beta. We won't ever leave you. You are our family."
But it wasn't just Haseena who was moved. The others—Amar, Cheetah, Santosh, Anubhav, and Shivani—all stood frozen, their hearts breaking as they saw the vulnerability in KS's tiny face. She wasn't just a child anymore; she was someone with real fears, with real insecurities. And her question hit them all like a gut punch.
The doubts and insecurities that KS had were the same ones they had never addressed. What will happen when she's better? Will they keep her? Will they leave her like everyone else had?
"I don't know what to say," Cheetah said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "We've all been here for her, but we haven't really decided what comes next."
"We have to decide," Shivani said, her eyes locked on KS, who was now sleeping again, exhaustion overtaking her. "She deserves to know that she's not going anywhere. We can't let her think she's going to be abandoned again."
They all fell into a heavy silence, the weight of the decision pressing down on them. They had never really discussed what would happen after she got better, had they?
Amar shifted uncomfortably. "We all want the best for her," he said quietly. "But are we ready for this? Are we ready to make her a permanent part of our lives?"
Santosh sighed. "She needs a family. A real family. She needs someone who will be there for her every single day."
Anubhav was silent for a long time, his thoughts tangled. He had spent the last few weeks watching Haseena pour herself into taking care of KS, watching the others bond with her, and seeing the way the little girl had started to fit into their lives. And though there was uncertainty, though no one had spoken the words aloud yet, Anubhav knew, deep in his heart, what he had to do.
"I'll adopt her," Anubhav said quietly, his voice firm with finality. "She's my daughter. I'll be the one to give her a name, a home, a family. I'll make her mine."
The room fell silent for a moment, the weight of Anubhav's decision settling over them. And then, one by one, each of them nodded. There was a quiet sense of relief—this was what they all secretly wanted, even if they hadn't been brave enough to say it.
"I think that's the right thing," Shivani said with a smile, her eyes bright with unshed tears.
"Yeah," Cheetah added, grinning. "She's been part of the family from day one. This is just... the official version."
The decision was made, and that evening, they celebrated. It wasn't a grand party, but it didn't need to be. The six of them, sitting around a small table with cake and tea, shared laughter and joy, relieved that their paths were now clear. Haseena was glowing, her heart light for the first time in a long while.
"We'll tell her tomorrow when she wakes up," Haseena said, her voice full of hope. "We'll make sure she knows she's ours now, forever."
The next day, KS woke up groggy, her little body still a bit weak from the illness that had lingered. Her hair was damp from her bath, her face still a little puffy from the fever, but there was something in her eyes—a tiny flicker of recognition, of warmth. She was still sleepy, rubbing her eyes with her tiny hands, looking up at the faces around her.
But just as Haseena began to smile, preparing to tell KS the good news, the doorbell rang.
Everyone paused.
When they opened the door, a police officer stood in the doorway, her expression stern.
"Are you the caretakers of KS?" the officer asked, her voice all business. "I'm here to take her to her mother, Shagun."
A chill ran through the room.
Haseena's heart sank, her eyes wide in disbelief. "What do you mean? She's been with us... she's—"
The officer didn't let her finish. "Shagun is her legal guardian," the officer stated firmly. "We have orders to bring her back."
The room fell silent, the weight of the officer's words crashing down on them. And for the first time in what felt like forever, the future of little KS seemed uncertain again.
