The art exhibition hall was buzzing with life. Students moved between displays of abstract paintings, photography, and sculptures, their conversations filling the room with a low hum. Dunk stood in front of his painting, a quiet figure amidst the crowd, observing the reactions of passersby. His piece, a watercolor of a moonlit cityscape blurred with soft strokes and hazy lights, captured a feeling of solitude against the busy Bangkok night. He kept his gaze on the artwork, hoping to go unnoticed, but as the evening progressed, he felt a pair of eyes studying him as intently as he was studying his own painting. Dunk's gaze shifted, and he saw a guy, his expression a mix of curiosity and amusement, leaning against the wall just a few feet away. The stranger's eyes flicked between Dunk and the painting, a playful glint in them.
"Not a fan of crowds?" The guy's voice broke through Dunk's solitude, warm and smooth. "Or are you just hiding?"
Dunk blinked, caught off-guard. "I... I'm just not used to attention, I guess." He shifted awkwardly, unsure of how to respond.
"Pretty bold to make art and not want it seen." The guy grinned, and Dunk noted the effortless confidence in his posture. He wore a simple shirt and jeans, but there was a rebellious energy to him-a carefree aura that made Dunk both curious and wary.
"I want it to be seen," Dunk replied, his voice soft. "I just don't want people watching me when they look at it."
The stranger tilted his head, seeming to consider this. "Fair enough. Well, your work is impressive. It's like... the city is alive, but it's lonely too. I haven't seen anything like it."
Dunk's heart beat a little faster. Few people had ever looked so closely at his art, let alone understood it. "Thanks," he managed, his voice quieter than he intended. "It's just... how I see things."
"I can see that," the guy replied, flashing another smile. "I'm Joong, by the way." He extended a hand.
After a brief hesitation, Dunk shook it. "Dunk."
They stood there, hand in hand for a moment longer than necessary, and Dunk quickly pulled away, glancing down. Joong didn't seem fazed, his grin widening as he continued, "Nice to meet you, Dunk. So, tell me-what's the story behind this piece?"
Dunk glanced at his painting, then back at Joong. "It's just a memory," he said. "A night when I was out in the city, and everything felt-" He hesitated, the words hanging in the air. "Empty."
Joong's expression softened. "Well, you turned something empty into something beautiful." He chuckled. "Or maybe I just appreciate lonely things."
The comment caught Dunk off-guard, and he found himself smiling, a rare expression that seemed to amuse Joong even more. For the first time that evening, Dunk felt a little less out of place. Joong's easygoing presence was calming, and there was something about his gaze that held Dunk's attention, like Joong could see straight through his quiet facade.
"So, are you a fellow art student?" Dunk asked, curiosity getting the best of him.
Joong shook his head. "Nah, I'm a business major. I'm just here because my friend dragged me along, claiming I need to 'expand my horizons' or whatever." He laughed, the sound rich and carefree. "But I'm glad I came. You're the first person here I actually wanted to talk to."
Dunk felt a warmth spread through him, though he tried not to let it show. "Well, I'm... glad you liked my work."
"'Liked' is an understatement." Joong looked back at the painting, nodding. "I think it says a lot about you, too. You seem like someone with a lot on his mind."
Dunk chuckled softly, a rare sound from him. "I think everyone has a lot on their mind."
"True," Joong agreed. "But not everyone turns it into something that other people can feel." He paused, watching Dunk carefully. "I can see you put a lot of yourself into this."
Dunk's eyes met Joong's, and for a moment, everything else seemed to fade away. There was an openness in Joong's gaze, a sincerity that felt rare and strangely comforting.
Just then, Dunk's friend, Pond, appeared, his face lighting up when he saw Dunk. "There you are! I've been looking for you everywhere."
Dunk gave him a small nod. "I was just talking."
Pond's eyes shifted to Joong, curiosity sparking in his gaze. "Oh, you made a new friend?"
Joong held out his hand to Pond, his grin unaltering. "I'm Joong."
Pond accepted the handshake, glancing between Joong and Dunk with a knowing smile. "Nice to meet you. I'm Pond, Dunk's friend."
Joong raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by Pond's eagerness. "Well, Dunk was just telling me about his work. You know, this guy's got some real talent."
Pond nodded proudly. "Oh, I know. I've been saying that since we were kids."
Dunk felt himself blush slightly, overwhelmed by the attention. "Okay, let's not exaggerate," he muttered, trying to downplay Pond's enthusiasm.
But Joong's gaze remained steady, his smile softening. "I don't think it's an exaggeration. You've got something special here, Dunk. I mean it."
Dunk looked away, unsure of how to respond. Compliments weren't something he was used to, especially not from someone as charming and self-assured as Joong. But the sincerity in Joong's voice made him feel seen in a way he hadn't felt before.
"Anyway," Joong continued, breaking the moment, "I should get going before my friend leaves me here. But hey-if you ever want to grab a coffee or something, I'd love to hear more about your work."
Dunk looked up, surprised by the invitation. Joong's eyes held a hopeful glint, and before he could talk himself out of it, Dunk found himself nodding. "I'd like that."
Joong's grin widened. "Great. I'll see you around then." He gave Dunk one last smile before turning to walk away, leaving Dunk with a strange sense of anticipation lingering in his chest.
As Joong disappeared into the crowd, Pond nudged Dunk's arm, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Looks like someone made an impression."
Dunk rolled his eyes, feeling a warmth creep up his neck. "It's... it's nothing."
"Sure it is." Pond chuckled. "But hey, he seems nice. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to expand your horizons a bit."
Dunk couldn't suppress the small smile that formed on his lips as he watched Joong's figure fade into the distance. The night had begun as just another quiet evening in the world of art, but something about Joong's presence lingered, stirring something new and unfamiliar within him.
For the first time, Dunk found himself wondering what it might be like to let someone in. And as he looked back at his painting, he realized that maybe-just maybe-he was ready to step beyond his own horizons.
