That night, Dunk couldn’t sleep. Offroad’s words gnawed at him, filling his mind with doubts and questions. Joong had been nothing but sweet and attentive, but now Dunk wondered if there were parts of Joong he hadn’t yet seen. Parts he might not be ready for.
The following day, Dunk and Joong met up for lunch, and Dunk tried to shake the lingering doubts as they laughed and chatted. Joong was his usual self, cracking jokes, stealing fries from Dunk’s plate, and giving him that charming smile that melted Dunk’s defenses.
But as they were walking through the campus afterward, Dunk couldn’t hold back any longer. He needed to know more about Joong’s past, and why Offroad seemed so concerned.
“Joong,” Dunk began carefully, “can I ask you something?”
Joong looked at him, sensing the seriousness in Dunk’s tone. “Of course. What’s up?”
Dunk took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. “Offroad… he came to see me. He had a lot to say about you.”
Joong’s expression shifted, a mix of surprise and annoyance crossing his face. “What did he say?”
“Nothing too specific, just… hints,” Dunk replied, hesitating. “He said you have a past. That you’re complicated.”
Joong let out a heavy sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m sorry, Dunk. Offroad can be… a little protective. He’s always thought of me as someone who needs saving. But I don’t want you to think I’m hiding anything from you.”
Dunk waited, giving Joong space to explain. He could see the tension in Joong’s expression, the vulnerability he rarely showed.
“Yeah, I’ve made some mistakes,” Joong admitted, his voice low. “I’ve been in relationships that didn’t end well. I hurt people, and I’ve been hurt. And sometimes, I still carry those scars.”
Dunk’s heart softened, and he reached out, taking Joong’s hand. “You can tell me anything, Joong. I’m here for you, no matter what.”
Joong looked at Dunk, gratitude and relief filling his eyes. “Thank you, Dunk. I want this to work. I want us to work. But sometimes, I wonder if I deserve this. If I deserve you.”
Dunk squeezed his hand, his voice firm. “You do. We both deserve this.”
Their moment was interrupted by the sound of laughter nearby, breaking the intensity of the conversation. Joong smiled, pulling Dunk closer, and for a while, they simply enjoyed the warmth of each other’s presence.
But as they walked back toward campus, Dunk couldn’t shake the feeling that there were still pieces of Joong he didn’t fully understand. And he knew that, sooner or later, those hidden parts would come to the surface.
