The days following their shared night together had been a whirlwind of warmth and connection for Dunk and Joong. They were inseparable like the universe had conspired to bring their lives into perfect harmony. Their laughter echoed in quiet cafes, their whispered secrets were shared under the stars, and their hands always found each other in the crowd. Dunk felt like he had found a safe haven for the first time in a long while. But peace is often fleeting, and shadows from the past have a way of creeping back in. It was a sunny afternoon when Dunk stepped out of his final class, lifting the weight of the day from his shoulders. He was looking forward to meeting Joong for dinner, his thoughts filled with the soft smile that always greeted him. But as he descended the steps of the building, his heart sank. Leaning casually against a nearby wall was Mark. Dunk's mind raced. It had been months since Mark had vanished from their lives, and his reappearance now felt like a deliberate act of sabotage. Dunk squared his shoulders and walked forward, determined not to show the unease Mark's presence caused. Mark's smirk grew as Dunk approached. "Long time no see, Dunk." Dunk stopped a few feet away, his expression guarded. "What do you want, Mark?" His voice was calm, but the edge was unmistakable. Mark pushed himself off the wall, his movements slow and deliberate. "Just checking in. You know, making sure Joong hasn't... disappointed you yet." The words were like nails scraping against a chalkboard, but Dunk refused to let his anger show. He met Mark's gaze evenly. "Joong is nothing like what you're making him out to be. Whatever you're trying to accomplish here-it's over. We're happy, Mark. And nothing you say will change that." For a moment, Mark's smirk faltered, replaced by something darker. "You think you know him," he said, his tone low and menacing. "But you have no idea. I tried to warn you. Don't come crying to me when you find out the truth." Dunk clenched his fists, the weight of Mark's words sinking into his chest like stones. But he wouldn't let Mark see how deeply they unsettled him. Without another word, he turned and walked away, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction. As he made his way to the campus parking lot, Dunk's resolve hardened. Mark's games were a relic of the past-where they belonged. He wouldn't let them poison the happiness he had found with Joong.
Pulling out his phone, Dunk sent a quick text:
Dunk: Mark showed up after class. He tried to stir things up, but I didn't let him get to me.Joong's reply was almost immediate.
Joong: I'm sorry you had to deal with him. He's desperate and bitter. Don't let him get in your head. I love you, and nothing he says can change that.
Dunk smiled despite himself. Joong's words were like a balm, soothing the ache Mark had left behind. Later that evening, as they sat together in Joong's apartment, Dunk relayed the encounter in more detail. Joong listened intently, his hand resting on Dunk's knee, his thumb drawing slow, comforting circles. "I'm not afraid of Mark," Dunk said finally. "He's in the past. We're building something real, Joong. And I won't let him take that away from us." Joong pulled Dunk into a tight embrace, his voice steady and sure. "We won't let him. Together, we're stronger than anything he can throw at us." And as Dunk rested his head against Joong's chest, he knew that was true. Whatever storm Mark was trying to brew, it couldn't touch the foundation they had built together.
