"She… she isn’t my real mother. My father remarried her after my mother’s death."

His tone was quiet but resolute, years of pain evident in his eyes.

Meerab watched her father, her own heart aching with sadness for him. She took a breath, looking up at him.

Baba, what was the file Mahir gave to you earlier?”.

She wanted to steer away from the sadness, to bring focus back to something else, anything else.

At her question, everyone exchanged uneasy glances. Anwar and Nazia shared a look, silently deciding how to continue.

Nazia took a gentle breath and turned to Meerab, her voice soft but carrying a hint of anticipation.

"Meerab, beta… there’s one more truth
they hid from us."

Meerab’s eyes widened slightly, waiting for them to continue. Her heart pounded, bracing herself for what was to come.

Anwar took a step closer, looking into her eyes as he spoke.

"You have a twin, Meerab."

Twin?”

Meerab’s voice was filled with shock. She looked around at everyone, as if searching for confirmation, disbelief written across her face.

Who?”

Anwar and Nazia’s gazes shifted, landing on Mahir. Meerab’s eyes followed theirs and landed on him, a mixture of shock, wonder, and hope lighting up her expression. She looked back and forth between her parents and Mahir, trying to take it all in.

Mahir stepped forward, meeting her gaze with a soft, almost tentative smile, as though he too was still adjusting to the truth. He moved to sit beside her, and, without a word, Meerab threw her arms around him. The warmth of her embrace melted away any remaining doubts, and Mahir wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. After all the years they had spent together, neither of them knowing, it was both surreal and beautiful.

They broke apart, still stunned by the new reality, as if looking at each other through new eyes. Everyone else stood silently around them, giving them space in this precious moment of reunion, but questions lingered in the room, questions left unanswered.

Salma, sensing Meerab’s exhaustion, stepped forward with a soft smile.

“I think we should let Meerab take some rest,”

she suggested gently.

Everyone nodded in agreement, understanding how much she needed to recover. Nazia approached her, brushing a hand over Meerab’s forehead.

"Will you have something to eat, beta?"

Nazia asked, her voice filled with motherly care.

Meerab shook her head with a small smile.

I’m alright, Ammi,”

she replied, grateful for the concern.

Nazia gave a gentle nod, then looked at both her children with tenderness.

"Alright, but if you need anything, just let me know, okay?"

Meerab nodded, and Nazia kissed her forehead before stepping away, leaving the room with the others.

As everyone filtered out, Meerab remained on the bed, Mahir and Murtasim still by her side. Mahir reached out, giving her hand a gentle squeeze before he stood.
