Farjad entered the lounge, his sudden appearance interrupting the girls’ chatter. All heads turned towards him.
“Assalamualaikum,”
he greeted nervously.
The girls returned his greeting, slightly surprised by his interruption.
Farjad’s eyes landed on Umeed.
“Umeed, I need to talk to you. Can you come with me?”
Umeed raised her eyebrows, clearly caught off guard. She looked towards the girls for a moment, searching their faces as if for reassurance. Haya shrugged lightly, Mariyam’s curiosity was clear, and Meerab was already smiling knowingly.
Umeed turned back to Farjad, nodded hesitantly, and stood up.
“Okay.”
As the two walked out of the lounge, Haya leaned forward.
“What has happened to boys today?”
“God knows,”
Mariyam replied, just as surprised.
Meerab chuckled softly, her eyes gleaming with interest.
Farjad led Umeed to the balcony, his steps careful. He opened the door, and as soon as they stepped out, he quietly shut it behind them. A cool breeze hit the balcony, but the tension in the air was unmistakable.
Umeed turned to face him.
“Is everything okay, Farjad? Why do you look so nervous?”
Her tone was light but filled with concern.
Farjad swallowed, his heart racing.
“Yes, everything is okay.”
Umeed narrowed her eyes slightly, unconvinced.
“Then what did you want to talk to me about?”
Farjad didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he reached into his pocket and took out his wallet. Umeed watched him, her curiosity growing. Farjad’s hands trembled slightly as he pulled out a small, old paper ring. The edges were creased, and the paper had aged, but its fragility only made it more special.
Umeed tilted her head.
“What’s that?”
Farjad hesitated before answering.
“It’s… it’s a paper ring. I made it for you.”
Umeed’s eyes widened slightly.
“For me?”
Farjad nodded, his voice soft.
“When you and your family were shifting to Turkey, I wanted to give this to you, but I couldn’t.”
Umeed stared at him, stunned into silence.
Farjad took a deep breath, his gaze dropping for a moment before he looked back at her.
“You were probably angry at me, right? When I didn’t come to see you off that day. But the truth is… I couldn’t. I couldn’t see you leave. I didn’t even know why at the time.”
He paused, gathering his thoughts as the breeze brushed past them.
“Growing up, I realized why. I had fallen in love with you, Umeed. Maybe I wanted to give this ring to you back then as a token of love, but I couldn’t. I just… didn’t have the courage.”
