The soft evening breeze carried a calmness as Murtasim guided Meerab’s family to the car. The setting sun cast a golden glow, but amidst the serene environment, there was a quiet tension that only a few could sense.
As they reached the car, Hannan’s eyes lingered on Murtasim and Meerab. A warm smile played on his lips as he admired the two, unknowingly drawn to the subtle yet unspoken connection between them. Mahir, walking beside him, noticed this and frowned slightly, his disappointment clear.
"Very cute, right?"
Mahir said, his tone carrying a slight edge as he glanced at Hannan.
"Yes,"
Hannan replied honestly, his smile growing wider.
"Hannan bhai,"
Mahir called out sharply, his strict tone snapping Hannan out of his daze.
Hannan turned to look at Mahir, confusion flashing across his face.
"UMM,"
Mahir said pointedly, reminding him of their mission.
Realizing his mistake, Hannan cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Oh, sorry,"
he said quickly, adjusting his stance.
The two exchanged a knowing look before quietly trailing behind Murtasim and Meerab.
At the car, Murtasim carefully placed the suitcase in the trunk. His every movement was deliberate, a quiet thoughtfulness in the way he handled their luggage. He then walked to the front passenger door and opened it, expecting Meerab to take the seat beside him. But before she could notice, Hannan quickly slid into the seat, grinning mischievously.
"Thank you, Murtasim,"
Hannan said, his voice was light and teasing.
Murtasim’s smile vanished almost instantly. He straightened, his jaw tightening slightly as he glanced toward the backseat where Meerab and Mahir were arranging the remaining bags. Mahir shut the trunk and turned toward the car, gesturing for Meerab to follow.
Meerab, seemingly unaware of the small interaction between Murtasim and Hannan, climbed into the backseat and settled beside Mahir. Murtasim stood there for a moment, silently observing, a flicker of frustration and resignation crossing his face.
Mahir leaned forward from the backseat, his cheerful tone breaking the tension.
"Murtasim bhai, let’s leave. Mama and Baba already left in the other car."
Murtasim gave a curt nod and made his way to the driver’s seat. Sitting down, he adjusted the rearview mirror, his eyes instinctively catching a glimpse of Meerab. She was engrossed in her phone, her face calm but distant. His grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly before he started the car and began driving.
The car was filled with an odd silence, broken only by the soft hum of the engine. Murtasim's eyes flickered to the rearview mirror now and then, stealing glances at Meerab, who remained unaware of his watchful gaze. Her attention stayed fixed on her phone, her expression indifferent.
In the passenger seat, Hannan and Mahir were busy on their phones, but it was clear they were communicating silently. Mahir sent a message to Hannan, smirking as he watched him read it. Hannan stifled a laugh and quickly replied, his shoulders shaking slightly.
Meerab, noticing their suppressed amusement, raised an eyebrow and looked at Mahir questioningly.
"What’s going on?"
