August 2019, Holidays
The Highlands stretched out before them, lush and green, dotted with wildflowers and rolling hills under the Scottish sky. Matilda could barely contain her excitement as the family settled into their rooms at Balmoral, the beloved royal estate. For as long as she could remember, Balmoral had been a place of peaceful summer getaways, where they could escape the bustle of public life and spend uninterrupted time together. The large castle, nestled amid the breathtaking landscape, felt like a world of its own, far removed from the formalities of Buckingham Palace.
As the family gathered for breakfast the following morning, Matilda's eyes sparkled with an idea. She looked up from her plate, barely able to hold in her excitement.
"Papa," she said, her voice filled with anticipation, "can we visit some of the Harry Potter places in Scotland?"
William exchanged a glance with Kate, a smile tugging at his lips. He knew Matilda was a massive fan of the Harry Potter series, having read the books multiple times and watched the movies countless more. She'd even tried to convince her siblings to play wizard duels, complete with homemade wands and invisible cloaks.
"Well, that sounds like a wonderful idea," William said, nodding. "I think an excursion to the Highlands to see some Harry Potter locations is just what we need. What do you say, George? Charlotte? Louis?"
George, always up for an adventure, grinned and gave an enthusiastic nod. Charlotte's eyes brightened, and even little Louis looked intrigued, though he wasn't quite sure what a "Harry Potter" was just yet.
After a hearty breakfast, they set off on their journey, piling into a Land Rover, with William at the wheel and the children chattering excitedly about what they hoped to see. Balmoral was located near some of the most famous landscapes featured in the movies, and William had planned a scenic drive to Loch Shiel, one of the iconic spots from the series. As they traveled, William told them stories about Scotland's history, weaving tales of brave Highlanders and the ancient clans who once ruled the land.
The first stop was Glenfinnan Viaduct, where the Hogwarts Express was filmed crossing the iconic bridge. As they arrived, Matilda's eyes grew wide with amazement. The towering stone arches seemed to stretch on forever, curving gracefully against the dramatic Highland backdrop.
"Look, Matilda!" George pointed to the railway line above. "That's where the train crosses. Imagine riding the Hogwarts Express!"
"I wish we could actually go to Hogwarts," Matilda said with a sigh, her imagination running wild. She could almost picture the scarlet steam engine roaring over the viaduct, taking its passengers to the magical school.
"Maybe one day they'll invent a real train to Hogwarts," William joked, patting Matilda on the back. "Until then, we'll have to make do with these amazing sights."
The children took turns posing with their imaginary wands, casting spells at each other in front of the viaduct. William couldn't help but chuckle as Matilda pretended to "levitate" Charlotte with an expertly shouted Wingardium Leviosa! Their laughter echoed through the valley, mingling with the sound of the Highland breeze.
Next, they made their way to Loch Shiel, a stunning freshwater lake framed by misty hills and dense forests. This was where many of the lake scenes in the Harry Potter movies had been filmed, and it was every bit as magical in real life as it appeared on screen. The deep blue water shimmered under the midday sun, and the mountains cast a serene reflection over the lake.
Matilda stood by the shore, breathing in the crisp Highland air. "I can see why they filmed here," she whispered, almost in awe. "It really does feel like magic."
William wrapped an arm around her shoulder, nodding. "Scotland has that effect," he said softly. "It's wild and beautiful—just like the stories we love."
As the afternoon sun began to dip, the family set up a small picnic by the lake. Kate had packed a simple spread of sandwiches, fruit, and juice, and the children ate happily, still enchanted by the sights they'd seen. Matilda couldn't stop talking about the viaduct, and George joined in, trying to remember every detail from the movies.
After they ate, the family relaxed by the shore, skipping stones across the water. Matilda found a perfectly flat stone and concentrated hard, trying to mimic her father's expert technique. Her first attempt sent the stone plopping straight into the water, but on her second try, it skipped three times, sending ripples through the lake.
"Brilliant!" William cheered, ruffling her hair as she beamed with pride.
As the light faded, the family packed up their picnic and began the journey back to Balmoral. The children, still buzzing with excitement, chattered all the way home, reliving their favorite moments of the day. Matilda leaned her head against the window, her thoughts filled with images of castles, mountains, and magical adventures.
That night, as they gathered around the fireplace back at the castle, Matilda turned to her father with a contented smile.
"Thank you for today, Papa. It really did feel like magic."
William smiled, pulling her close. "Anytime, Matilda. Sometimes, the magic is in the time we spend together, right here."
As they all snuggled up together in the cozy warmth of Balmoral, Matilda closed her eyes, feeling safe, happy, and deeply grateful for the simple, magical memories made with her family.
