It was a chilly December morning when Matilda arrived at school, bundled in her woolen coat, scarf, and gloves. The festive season was fast approaching, and the students at Lambrook School were filled with excitement for the holidays. The school corridors buzzed with talk of the latest headlines, but there was one topic that dominated the day's chatter: the newly released Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan. Matilda had heard whispers about it from her classmates, and today, the conversation found its way to her.
As she entered her classroom, Matilda noticed a small group of students gathered around a desk, their voices low but animated. One of them, a boy named James, spoke up.
"Did you watch Harry & Meghan on Netflix yet? I heard it's all about how they left the royal family. Pretty cool, right?"
Matilda stiffened. She had been dreading this moment. It was impossible to avoid the conversation entirely, but she had hoped it wouldn't reach her during the school day. Meghan, her aunt, had been the subject of much media attention in recent years, and Matilda didn't have a kind word for her. She'd seen enough of the headlines and the interviews to know that Meghan's story didn't sit well with her.
"No, I didn't watch it," Matilda replied firmly, her voice steady but slightly cold. "And I don't care about it."
James raised an eyebrow, surprised. "What do you mean? It's all over the news. Everyone's talking about it."
"I don't care about Aunt Meghan's show," Matilda said, her tone a little sharper than she intended. "It's not something I want to be involved with. She never treated our family right."
There was a silence in the air. Some of the other children in the group looked at each other, exchanging uncertain glances. Matilda's words seemed to have a weight that silenced the chatter. But then, a girl named Lucy, who was always outspoken, decided to challenge her.
"Well, that's harsh, Matilda," Lucy said, crossing her arms. "Don't you think it's sad how they left the royal family? I mean, they wanted to make a difference, didn't they?"
Matilda felt a surge of frustration. "It's not about making a difference," she retorted, her voice trembling with emotion. "It's about the way they did it. The way Aunt Meghan treated everyone, including my grandparents, and then left us all in the middle of it. I don't care how many interviews they do. It's not how a family should act."
The room fell quiet for a moment. Matilda had always been a reserved child, one who rarely spoke so bluntly about personal matters. But when it came to her family, especially her father, Prince William, and her mother, Catherine, Matilda was fiercely protective. Her eyes narrowed as she looked at Lucy, who now seemed a bit taken aback by Matilda's words.
"Do you even know how much hurt they've caused?" Matilda continued, her voice trembling slightly, though her resolve never wavered. "It's not just about leaving. It's about how they talked about my family. My parents do so much for the country, and all they did was criticize them in public. And do you think that was fair? For my father, for my mother, for me and my siblings?"
Lucy's expression softened, and she seemed to realize that Matilda's words came from a place of deep emotion, not just a child's naive defense of her parents. Matilda's protective instincts had kicked in, and while Lucy had initially been dismissive, she now appeared unsure of how to respond.
"Matilda, I didn't mean to upset you," Lucy said quietly, her voice softening. "I guess I didn't realize it was that serious."
"I just don't like hearing people talk about my family like that," Matilda said, her tone returning to calm but still firm. "There's a lot about it that people don't understand. The press gets it all wrong."
