DATE: APRIL 2023
PLACE : ANMER HALL, LONDON
The soft warmth of April spread across the Norfolk countryside, carrying with it the promise of spring's renewal. At Anmer Hall, nestled amidst rolling fields and ancient oaks, the sound of laughter often drifted through the open windows, carried on the fresh breeze. This month was a rare reprieve from the public duties and expectations that often dominated royal life, giving Princess Matilda and her family precious time to connect in ways that truly mattered.
Matilda awoke one morning to the faint chirping of birds outside her window. The golden sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting delicate patterns on her bedroom walls. The familiar tranquility of Anmer Hall always filled her with a sense of calm—a stark contrast to the bustling life they led in London. She stretched lazily and then caught the smell of something delicious wafting up from the kitchen.
"Matilda, breakfast is ready!" her mother's voice rang out from downstairs.
"Coming!" she called back, quickly slipping out of bed and pulling on a pair of jeans and a cozy jumper.
When she entered the kitchen, the sight before her brought an instant smile to her face. Prince George and Prince Louis were mid-battle over the last piece of toast, Charlotte was intently spreading butter on her own slice, and Catherine moved gracefully between them, orchestrating the chaos with a practiced ease.
"Morning, darling," Catherine said with a warm smile, placing a plate of scrambled eggs on the table for Matilda.
"Morning, Mum," Matilda replied, sliding into her usual seat.
The sound of footsteps heralded William's arrival, and he entered holding a steaming mug of tea and a slightly bemused expression. He paused, surveying the scene: Charlotte's butter-covered hands, George's triumphant declaration of victory, and Louis's exaggerated pout.
"Is it always this loud in here, or am I just getting old?" William asked, shaking his head with mock exasperation.
"You're definitely getting old," Charlotte quipped without missing a beat, prompting a burst of laughter from everyone at the table.
Later that morning, the family ventured outdoors for one of their favorite activities: a long walk across the sprawling fields surrounding Anmer Hall. These walks had become a cherished tradition—a time for them to talk, play, and simply enjoy each other's company away from the pressures of royal life.
Matilda, always one to lead the charge, dashed ahead with George and Charlotte close behind her.
"Let's race to the tree line!" George declared, his competitive streak shining through.
"Deal!" Matilda replied, already sprinting.
"Wait for me!" Louis shouted, scrambling to keep up.
William and Catherine followed at a more leisurely pace, laughing as they watched their children dart across the field, their laughter carried on the wind.
"You know, I think Matilda's getting faster," William remarked, his tone half-teasing.
"She's growing up so quickly," Catherine replied softly, her eyes following Matilda. "Sometimes I wish we could freeze moments like this."
"Me too," William said, his expression thoughtful. "But it's these moments that remind us why we do what we do."
Matilda reached the tree line first, turning to face George with a triumphant grin.
"Still the fastest!" she teased, catching her breath.
"Only because I let you win," George retorted, though the grin on his face betrayed his words.
